The lake was commissioned under the British colonial era, planned by Sir William Ward, then Chief Commissioner of Assam, and built in 1894 by Colonel Hopkins, designed by engineer Fitzwilliam Thomas Pollok. Originally serving as a recreational spot for British officials and their families, it has since evolved into a graceful urban retreat surrounded by botanical gardens. A unique local story adds charm: a Khasi prisoner reportedly helped beautify the area around the lake during its construction. The lake has a distinctive horseshoe shape, edging around lush gardens, making it visually pleasing from many vantage points. A graceful wooden/metal foot‐bridge spans the lake, providing the perfect photo spot and connecting the walkways around. Surrounding botanical gardens are dotted with orchids, flowerbeds, neatly paved pathways, and plenty of benches — making it ideal for peaceful strolls or quiet reflection. The atmosphere is calm yet lively enough: ducks and swans often glide across the water, and the trees arch over pathways, filtering the soft hill‐station light.

🚗 How to Reach & Practical Info Location: In central Shillong, East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya. By Road: From Shillong city centre or neighbouring points, you can hire a taxi, cab or walk from nearby areas like Police Bazaar. Entry and Opening Hours: Generally open daily. Entry fee around ₹10 for adults, and ₹5 for children/seniors. Boat rides are available too (charges vary). Best Visiting Hours: Early morning or late afternoon offer the most pleasant lighting for photography and the most comfortable strolls.

🍂 Best Time to Visit – Why November & Blossom Season Shine Although the lake is pleasant year‐round, the late winter/early spring months (November to February) offer crisp air, clear skies, and gorgeous natural light. Among those months, many visitors note how the surrounding gardens sparkle during peach/cherry blossom season (or similar local flowering events) — making for standout photography and memorable visits. The weather: cooler temps, fewer crowds, making walks along the gardens and boat rides more relaxed. Tip: Bring a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes. 🎡 Activities & Why It’s Child‐Friendly Leisure Strolls: The paved pathways around the lake are smooth and safe — ideal for families pushing prams or toddlers running alongside. Picnic Spots: Benches and lawns invite lunch under trees or a soft chat by the water. You’ll often see families with kids feeding ducks or enjoying ice-cream. It’s manageable in size — you don’t need an entire day; 1–2 hours suffice for a delightful visit, making it perfect for families or those short on time. The combination of garden + lake + hills + water + bridge = a complete experience for kids, couples, photographers, and slow‐travel...

Ward’s Lake is a beautiful and peaceful spot in Shillong, perfect for couples, families, and friends. The well-maintained gardens are full of blooming flowers, adding to the scenic beauty. There are ducks swimming in the lake, and you can even enjoy boating for a relaxing experience. Facilities are well taken care of, with clean washrooms available for both men and women. The entry fee is just ₹20 per head, making it an affordable outing. A unique experience here is the opportunity to wear Khasi traditional clothes (₹100 per head), which is a fun way to immerse in the local culture. The only downside was spotting a condom floating in the lake, which is disappointing and harmful to the environment and the ducks living there. It would be great if visitors were more responsible and disposed of waste properly. Overall, it’s a must-visit place in Shillong for a refreshing and enjoyable time!
