Chaityabhoomi, located in Dadar, Mumbai, is a revered Buddhist chaitya and the cremation place of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a key figure in the revival of Buddhism in India. It stands as a significant pilgrimage site for millions of Ambedkar followers and those who admire his contribution to social justice and equality.

Historical and Cultural Significance Dr. Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, in Delhi, and his body was brought to Mumbai, where he was cremated at the site now known as Chaityabhoomi near Dadar Chowpatty. This day is commemorated as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, attracting large gatherings of his supporters annually.

The site symbolizes the struggle for social justice, equality, and the upliftment of marginalized communities, aligning with Ambedkar's lifelong fight against caste discrimination and his decision to embrace Buddhism.

Chaityabhoomi has evolved into a cultural, political, and social hub for Dalits and Ambedkarite-Neo Buddhists, fostering community, activism, and celebration of Ambedkar’s ideals.

Architecture and Features The memorial features architecture inspired by ancient Buddhist structures like the Stupa and the Ashokan pillars. The main entrance gate is a replica of the Gate of the Stupa of Sanchi, and inside stands a replica of the Ashoka Pillar.

The square-shaped structure has a dome and houses the relics of Ambedkar in an urn kept in a sanctum open to visitors. Inside, there are busts of Ambedkar and a statue of Gautam Buddha, reflecting his embrace of Buddhism.

The site includes a peaceful garden and a stupa-like structure where people gather to meditate or pay respects.

Pilgrimage and Events Millions visit Chaityabhoomi annually, especially on December 6, Mahaparinirvan Diwas, to pay homage to Ambedkar through prayers, rituals, and cultural programs.

Other significant events include Ambedkar Jayanti (birth anniversary) and Dhammachakra Pravartan Din (marking Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism).

The site also serves as a place for Buddhist prayers and rituals, drawing followers who celebrate Ambedkar's legacy and Buddhist values of equality, compassion, and non-violence.

Location and Environment Chaityabhoomi is situated beside Dadar Chowpatty beach in Mumbai, providing a serene and contemplative environment despite the bustling city surroundings.

The grounds are well maintained and provide a tranquil space for reflection, with informative displays about Ambedkar’s life and achievements.

Chaityabhoomi stands as both a sacred memorial and a vibrant symbol of Ambedkar's enduring legacy in the fight for social justice and the empowerment of marginalized...

Really nice place to enjoy, viewing deck is good but too much crowded,(mainly avoid going on sunday, too much crowd). Good place to chill with friends while walking on the beach. You feel a different energy in this place. And altogether a satisfaction and mindfulness. Cleanliness is an issue.

Chaitya Bhoomi is a reverred place of pilgrimage for the Buddhists in India. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution was cremated here after his death on 6th December, 1956 in accordance with Buddhist traditions. Eventually, this place was later converted to Chaitya Bhoomi which is now a National Monument.

The Chaitya Bhoomi Memorial Monument was inaugurated by Mrs. Meerabai Yashvantrao Ambedkar, who is the daughter-in-law of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, on December 5, 1971. A large number of people from all over the country visit Chaitya Bhoomi every year on December 6th to offer respects and pay homage to Dr Ambedkar. Carrying millions of blue waving Flags they march to the Chaitya Bhoomi on this day. Several strategic junctions and roads near Chaitya Bhoomi in Dadar Face massive traffic congestion on this day.
