Just go there to admire it's beautiful beauty. Obviously tongue tied for words. I am never going to see the Royal Albert hall... Or the like. But this place is good enough to elicit the feeling I might get there. Very pleasant ushers. Felt particularly special because they didn't hound you about carrying a camera and such. We happened to see the Gala Opening of the recent Comedy Festival. The lighting staging every thing was awe inspiring. It is a little small... But hey by Bombay standards... Humongous. If you are visiting and have some passion in arts... consider going there if a show matches your requirement. Take the upper balcony seats... Cheaper and better perspective. Think about it historical way... The rich folk in the front seats looking up to the performers. The cheaper seats up there looking 'down' on the rest The design is a spoof in itself. Yet I digress. Visit it... And remember to dress for the occasion. Not over dressed but match the occasion or the gig being performed. They don't expect it. But you owe it to the majesty this place bestows upon you We used bookmyshow to look up any happening events. As luck would have it.. we found something right up our alley. Oh in case you were wondering- we paid for the front seats. Not worth it. Not a single stand-up threw an insult our way. And all that time we were really...

This was my first visit to the Opera House. Coming from South Mumbai, and it was a Saturday evening - there was moderate traffic but there was no parking that I could see. Thankfully, I had a driver. He parked in some lane and the guy charged him Rs. 200 for 2 hrs of parking. The ambience inside was eclectic. The period architecture was breathtaking since we only see concrete and a ton of glass facade these days. The staircase was narrow but ornate. One observation - you need to be careful while walking as the stairs jut out on the sides but the step width in the middle with the red carpet is narrower. There are two levels and the stage is made of wood. Very charming and smells of history and tradition. Kudos to the present owners and operators for maintaining the charm of the place. A few minutes walk behind the place and you will reach Marine drive where you can enjoy a stroll. :) Getting a cab after the show is a tad difficult so maybe opt for Ola/ Uber. A visit to this place is highly recommended. I would love to come back and enjoy a play here. Thanks to my sister-in-law for taking us to this place. Unforgettable experience of...

Its a dream come true to visit this beautiful place filled with nostalgia. It was close for years untill some philanthropist redid the whole decor and brought it back to shape. Nowadays some good plays and musicals happen out here. Seating is wonderful with easy reclining chairs and red upholstry and matching curtains with some art decor every nook and corner. Strictly no food and drinks allowed inside as bags and purses are checked by the ushers. Only be careful on the staircase as it is narrow and winding, sometimes can get too narrow in places and difficult to navigate for not so old people and specially if there's a big crowd pushing you. Or u may use the lift but be prepared to wait in a long queue. The curtains and lights transform the place into a fairyland of yesteryear's night out. Ohh I completely forgot about the little food court or restaurant on the ground floor. Its food is goo but pricey, typical gujju type menu and continental stuff too. (i loved the coffee---100 bucks for less than 100ml) Parking is a tight squeeze specially in that locality anywhere, although I'm not sure if there is Valet parking...

Went there with lot of expectations, on 1st December to view the concert - Tribute to KAR Rahman. But was thoroughly disappointed. Below are the facts - 1.No seat no. were given, the crowd was waiting outside. Only one entrance with one street lad kind of a guy checking tickets. Took a long time, and remember no seat numbers. The behaviour was quite rude. He looked more like a tapori fellow. 2.When we went inside, we had to climb 4 floors with steep steps. 3. If you want to use toilet, get down 3 floors and climb again 4.No drinking water anywhere on any floor, (not even for sale) 5. When we came down after the show, a long line at the toilet, took 20 minutes to get our turn. The street lad fellow didn't even allow us to wait inside, he asked us to wait outside the auditorium. The overall experience was as if an Indian attending a concert in the British era, in 1930s. Neither the infrastructure nor the behaviour - both are useless. Anyway parking is a problem there (not limited only to this venue) .FINALLY I WONDER WHAT FIRE SAFETY MEASURES ARE IN PLACE WITH ONLY ONE NARROW STAIRCASE AND ONE SMALL DOOR FOR ENTRANCE AND EXIT.

The Royal Opera House was conceived in 1908 by Maurice Bandmann, a famous entertainer from Calcutta, and Jehangir Framji Karaka, who headed a coal brokers’ firm. A baroque design incorporating a blend of European and Indian detailing was chosen for the structure. A long frontage was created to let carriages drive up to the entrance. Twenty-six rows of boxes behind the stalls were put up for the best view of the stage. The ceiling was constructed to enable even those in the gallery to hear every word uttered by the performers. Initially, the opera house was used strictly for staging operas, and catered almost exclusively to the city's elite - a globalised layer of Indians, British officials, a few Europeans. After the first world war, times and tastes changed and it became difficult to maintain and run the opera house, a sumptuous building, on the income from the opera alone. Also, with the coming of "talkie" movies in the early 1930s, the popularity of cinema increased. In 1935, the opera house was modified to accommodate movie screenings and fashion shows.

I think it's safe to call the Royal Opera House the best venue for Theatre in Mumbai. It's nowhere close to the size of some of the other venues but it more than makes up for it with it's opulence and comfort. I'm a rather tall man, but there's more legroom than even I know what to do with and that's great. I have realised that it's more important to sit closer to the centre here than most other venues and there is less incline between seats so people might have trouble viewing if there's someone really tall sitting right ahead. But the venue is small enough for it to not make that much of a difference and you'll get great views no matter where you sit. More importantly, the building itself is so beautiful, if the play you're there to see isn't up to standards, just look around and marvel at the architecture.
