Just go there to admire it's beautiful beauty. Obviously tongue tied for words. I am never going to see the Royal Albert hall... Or the like. But this place is good enough to elicit the feeling I might get there. Very pleasant ushers. Felt particularly special because they didn't hound you about carrying a camera and such. We happened to see the Gala Opening of the recent Comedy Festival. The lighting staging every thing was awe inspiring. It is a little small... But hey by Bombay standards... Humongous. If you are visiting and have some passion in arts... consider going there if a show matches your requirement. Take the upper balcony seats... Cheaper and better perspective. Think about it historical way... The rich folk in the front seats looking up to the performers. The cheaper seats up there looking 'down' on the rest The design is a spoof in itself. Yet I digress. Visit it... And remember to dress for the occasion. Not over dressed but match the occasion or the gig being performed. They don't expect it. But you owe it to the majesty this place bestows upon you We used bookmyshow to look up any happening events. As luck would have it.. we found something right up our alley. Oh in case you were wondering- we paid for the front seats. Not worth it. Not a single stand-up threw an insult our way. And all that time we were really...
Read moreThis was my first visit to the Opera House. Coming from South Mumbai, and it was a Saturday evening - there was moderate traffic but there was no parking that I could see. Thankfully, I had a driver. He parked in some lane and the guy charged him Rs. 200 for 2 hrs of parking. The ambience inside was eclectic. The period architecture was breathtaking since we only see concrete and a ton of glass facade these days. The staircase was narrow but ornate. One observation - you need to be careful while walking as the stairs jut out on the sides but the step width in the middle with the red carpet is narrower. There are two levels and the stage is made of wood. Very charming and smells of history and tradition. Kudos to the present owners and operators for maintaining the charm of the place. A few minutes walk behind the place and you will reach Marine drive where you can enjoy a stroll. :) Getting a cab after the show is a tad difficult so maybe opt for Ola/ Uber. A visit to this place is highly recommended. I would love to come back and enjoy a play here. Thanks to my sister-in-law for taking us to this place. Unforgettable experience of...
Read moreIts a dream come true to visit this beautiful place filled with nostalgia. It was close for years untill some philanthropist redid the whole decor and brought it back to shape. Nowadays some good plays and musicals happen out here. Seating is wonderful with easy reclining chairs and red upholstry and matching curtains with some art decor every nook and corner. Strictly no food and drinks allowed inside as bags and purses are checked by the ushers. Only be careful on the staircase as it is narrow and winding, sometimes can get too narrow in places and difficult to navigate for not so old people and specially if there's a big crowd pushing you. Or u may use the lift but be prepared to wait in a long queue. The curtains and lights transform the place into a fairyland of yesteryear's night out. Ohh I completely forgot about the little food court or restaurant on the ground floor. Its food is goo but pricey, typical gujju type menu and continental stuff too. (i loved the coffee---100 bucks for less than 100ml) Parking is a tight squeeze specially in that locality anywhere, although I'm not sure if there is Valet parking...
