Absolutely Abysmal We’ve been craving Asian food for awhile and the closest one was the bay of buddha at pondy. We drive all the way from Chidambaram to eat there. Unfortunately due to rains and us having a baby delayed the drive and we reached there at 10:00. We parked our car and called the promenade to ask if there were tables available. We were told we could walk in and have a table. Upon this confirmation we enter and the wait staff there told us they were closed despite us calling beforehand. This goes on to be a chain of disappointments After pointing out the miscommunication between them and the reception desk they gave us a table (which was shaky btw, ruining the entire dinner) We all are a few starters soup and two mains and a desert. Most of this is that normal. nothing over the top extraordinary. There are tons of Asian restaurants in Chennai which have better ambiance service and taste. The wet stuff did not refill water immediately and every time we needed extra sauce we had to ask them to which they will be no response for the next few minutes.
And we’d have to call them back again only for them to see the kitchen is closed and we can’t get extras We ordered nasi goreng which was served without the satay and fish crackers which is the norm at every Asian restaurant. I then asked for the fish crackers which was then brought to me. I’m also pretty sure I saw a rat on the terrace. To add more unpleasantness, we weren’t offered a highchair or baby seat. Me and my husband took turn holding the baby while we ate.
And on top of all this when we were disappointed and didn’t want to be there any longer and asked them to pack all the remaining food for takeaway, it only ended up being more of a tragedy. The staff packed the fish crackers with the honey sesame lamb sauce which made it all soggy. Who would’ve expected this from a really good restaurant which overcharhes their customers. Yes, we ordered A tomyum Golden prawns Grilled Calamari Honey sesame lamb Beef satay Nasi goreng Basil cheesecake
All these came over 5000 You read that right out bill was 5 grand. 5000rs for this horrid experience.
This is absolutely ridiculous for the standard of service offered there.
Wont recommend Zero stars
Humbly A super disappointed customer who drove 2 hours in the rain with a baby...
Read moreI visited The Bay by Buddha with high expectations after hearing several recommendations about their food, but the overall experience turned out to be extremely disappointing.
We ordered a few cocktails along with the raw mango salad with fried fish, Cambodian grilled prawns, and ebi tempura. On paper, the menu sounded promising, but when the food and drinks arrived, it was a complete disaster. The cocktails were uninspiring, and the food lacked both flavour and finesse. The dishes had no balance or depth, and the presentation felt careless. A glaring example of the lack of attention to detail was the soya sauce served—it was dark cooking soya instead of light soya, which any professional kitchen should know makes a huge difference in taste. Small details like this reveal whether a restaurant truly understands its cuisine, and sadly, it was obvious that the basics were being overlooked.
Dining out is not just about eating; it is about experiencing food that excites the senses and justifies the value being paid. Here, there was simply no character in the dishes, no spark that you would expect from a restaurant positioned at this level. What should have been a memorable culinary evening turned into frustration and disappointment.
The only saving grace was the staff and the location. The staff was courteous, polite, and did their best to ensure comfort, and the location itself is excellent with a pleasant ambiance. Unfortunately, no matter how good the service and setting are, if the food fails, the heart of the experience collapses.
By the end, we were so dissatisfied that we decided to skip dinner altogether, paid the bill, and walked out. It was deeply frustrating to see such potential wasted. For the prices charged, diners deserve quality, authenticity, and attention to detail—none of which were delivered that evening.
I would not recommend The Bay by Buddha to anyone seeking a true dining experience in Pondicherry. There are far better places where the food matches both the atmosphere...

Situated on the rooftop of the Promenade Hotel, the restaurant offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Bengal, especially during sunset, making it an ideal spot for a romantic dinner or a relaxing evening with friends.
The menu at Bay of Buddha is a delightful fusion of Pan-Asian cuisines, with a strong emphasis on fresh seafood. Diners can enjoy a variety of dishes inspired by the flavors of Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan, among others. The quality of the food is commendable, with each dish thoughtfully prepared and presented. Some standout items include the sushi platter, prawn dim sum, and the seafood laksa, which are particularly popular among regular patrons.
The ambiance of the restaurant is another major draw, with its open-air setting and soft lighting creating a tranquil atmosphere that perfectly complements the ocean views. The staff is attentive and friendly, ensuring that guests have a pleasant dining experience.
However, it is worth noting that Bay of Buddha is on the pricier side, which is expected given its prime location and the quality of the food and service. Despite this, the experience is well worth it, particularly for those looking to indulge in a memorable dining experience in Pondicherry.
