Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is one of the 108 Divya Desam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Sthalasayana Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Nilamangai Thayar. The temple is believed to have been built by the Pallavas, with later contributions from the Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and Madurai Nayaks. The temple is believed to be the birthplace of the Vaishnava Alvar saint Bhoothathalvar. Sthalasayana Perumal is believed to have appeared to sage Pundarika. The temple is open from 6 am to 12 pm and 3pm to 8:30 pm. Six daily rituals and a dozen yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the Bhoothath Alvar Avata festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Aipasi (October–November) being the most prominent. The temple is one of the 32 Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram that are declared as UN world heritage sites, but unlike others that are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.once sage Pundarika was performing penance worshiping Vishnu at this place. He collected Tamarasa flowers and submitted it to view Vishnu in Ksirabdhi Natha form, his posture in Ocean of milk. He collected 1,008 flowers and in his intensity, he scooped out water also in full. Vishnu came in disguise in the form of sage and asked him for food. The sage went to acquire food for the old man, but while returning he found that Vishnu remained in the place. Since Vishnu stayed in this place, he was called Sthalasayana Perumal.[1][2] The legend is sanctified by Bhoothath Alvar in his verses in Naalayira Divya Prabandham.[3] As per another legend, sage Agastya is believed to have visited the temple and he came around the temple and prostrated before the presiding deity. As per divine intervention, he was advised to remain in Astavasramam in the northern part of Pundreeka Theertham (temple tank).[4] As per another legend, a king by name Harikesarivarman used to visit the Nithyakalyana Perumal temple at Thiruvidandai everyday from Mahabalipuram and wanted to settle there. Vishnu was pleased by his devotion and appeared as Sthalasayana Perumal at Mahabalipuram

Arulmigu Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal Temple in Mahabalipuram is a historic and sacred site built during the Pallava reign in the 7th century and later expanded by the Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and Nayaks. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his reclining form known as Sthala Sayana Perumal, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams praised in the hymns of the Alvar saints. The temple is also believed to be the birthplace of the saint Bhoothath Alvar. Visitors enter through an impressive seven-tiered rajagopuram from the 15th–16th century. Inside, the sanctum houses the reclining deity with sage Pundarika depicted at his feet. The goddess Lakshmi is worshipped here as Nilamangai Thayar in a separate shrine. Other sub-shrines are dedicated to Andal, Lakshmi Narasimha, Rama, Hanuman, and Bhoothath Alvar. The temple has two sacred tanks, Pundareeka Pushkarni and Garuda Theertham, and a beautifully crafted vimanam called Gaganakriti. The temple is open from 6 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 8.30 pm. The Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal Temple, located in Mahabalipuram, is a beautiful and ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and divine presence, the temple features the Lord in a unique reclining posture, which gives the temple its name — “Sthala Sayana,” meaning "reclining on the ground." This posture is rare and adds a special charm to the temple. One of the highlights of the temple is its rich history and spiritual significance. It is believed that a sage named Pundarika performed intense prayers here, and Lord Vishnu appeared before him and chose to rest at this sacred spot. The temple is also closely associated with one of the twelve Alvars — Bhoothath Alvar — who is said to have been born here. Built in a traditional South Indian style, the temple has a calm and welcoming feel. The nearby temple tank, known as Pundarika Pushkarni, enhances the serene setting. Though small compared to other temples, its spiritual energy and coastal location make it a meaningful visit for devotees and travelers alike. It’s truly a hidden gem for those who seek divinity, peace, and a touch of timeless history.

It is said that Mahabali Chakravarthy ruled this sthalam and as per the varam he got from Vamaanar, one of the Incarnations (Avathaaram) taken by Sriman Narayanan, this sthalam is named as "Mahabalipuram". It is one of the said story about this sthalam.

Pundareeka Maharisi started and maintained a big nandavanam (Flower park) here and wanted to dedicate all the Lotus flowers which flowers in this nandhavam to the divine feet of Emperumaan.

Once, he plucked all those Lotus flowers and put them in a basket and started walking to Paramapadhanadhan in Thiruppaarkadal.

But, he could not walk cross the sea, because of the huge waves of the sea. To make the sea dry, he started to clear the water through his hands. But, actually he could not do that and it is impossible for an ordinary person to do so.

At that time, Emperumaan came there as an old man and told him he is hungry and he wants some food to eat. Perumal said if he gives the food, he can also help him to make the water dry.

Hearing this, Pundareekar kept the basket which is full of Lotus at that place and went back to his house to get some food for the Perumal, who has come as an old man. When he came along with the food, he could not find the old man and found that there is not water in the sea. At the same time, he could find Emperumaan, wearing the Lotus flowers all along his body shoulders and giving the Kidantha Kolam facing east direction in the empty floor.

As the Prarthanai (asking our needs to Perumal) of Pundareeka Maharishi, Emperumaan gave him the seva in this sthalam as seen in Paarkadal.

Near Moolavar, Pundareekar is present near the Lotus feet of the Lord (Thiruvadi of the Perumal.)

Near to this sthalam, on travelling along the west direction of the light house, we can find Aadhivaraga Murthy temple - Thiru Ida Vendhai.

Mahabalipuram is famous for its stone carved statues and sea shore. The speciality of the statues are shown to the world by all Pallava kings and the stone carved statues tell how their thinking is.

The Krishna Mandapam where we can find a 8 feet Krishnar and the Gopalan (Krishnan) getting the milk from cow.

Statue which explains the tapas done by Arjunan.

Two big rocks in which full of shapes of Cat to Elephant, Devas, Munivas, Lord Shiva giving Pasupa Astharam, and cat in the Kolam of doing tapas and rats around it. These are the shapes which are beautifully seen in these two big rocks.

Panja Pandavar Mandapam, Govardhana Mandapam, Panja Pandavas Ratham (Chariot) and all done in one rock and lots more can be seen.

Specials:

This is the Avathara Sthalam of Bhoodathalwar. This Sthalam is full of Artistic work temple it is also called as "Artha Sethu".

This is the 63rd Divya desam and the famous Sthala Sayana Perumal temple is located here. Lord gave Darshan to Pundareeka Maharishi here and since he came for a Rishi he gives Darshan without any weapons, and even Sayana in ground not even Adi sesha Such simple Sthala Sayana not found anywhere. Other Sayana are bhujanga Sayana, dharba sayana etc.

Since lord helped Maharishi by clearing ocean waters with his own hands couple of times as a disguised old man this place is called Ardha sethu - half of sethu. ( Rameswaram ) Sage Pundareeka wanted to give 1000 petal lotus to lord in thirupparkadal. He became so engrossed in Bhakti that he started to empty ocean waters several months and years to present 1000 petal lotus. Lord in guise of an old man came and asked for food, meanwhile Rishi explained his mission and lord told him till he came back with food he would assist to empty the ocean. Rishi mentioned he was old but Lord emptied quite faster and proved his work slowly. By the time he came after picking food Lord was lying there in his famous Sthala Sayana Darshan posture and Pundareeka Maharishi requested him to grant similar Darshan to all of visiting devotees.

This is the birth place of Boothathazhwar. Aippasi avittam. Here they say Azhwar taught Tamil language to Lord

Thayar is Nilamangai..Bhumi Devi...She is also gracing sitting posture without any Peetam or Lotus..directly on Bhoomi. Thirumangai Azhwar and Boothathazhwar both have sing praises of deity and Thayar here. A total of 27 paasurams for this shrine. This is one of the other major Varaha sthalam. This is one of my major Ishta deiva temple. Thirumangai Azhwar says in one paasuram 'karkiyai naan kandene' meaning Sthala Sayana Perumal even showed the Kalki form here to him.

Lord Lakshmi Narasimha, Sri Rama, Anjaneya, Boothathazhwar, Aandal naachiyar also grace this temple. Here problems due to litigations, land all come to end as both Perumal and Thayar are gracing simply directly on land.

The place is called Thiru Vala vendhai as Lord Varaha Embr aces Bhoomi piraati to his right side. There means Goddess, Vala - Right

Here's my little poem about the temple,

Sthala sayana Perumal Kovil ---- Thirukkadal Mallai near Mamallapuram

The one who gave Moksha To revered sage Pundareeka Blesses us here in sleeping posture To take away all our sadness and fear

Adorned near the beautiful Mamallapuram This temple has the beautiful sanctum Santorum Of our dear Sriman Narayana Simply sleeping as Sthala Sayana

The blessed consort Nilamangai Thayar With her adoring grace answers our prayer For the sincere prayers are always fulfilled While returning the Darshan makes us thrilled

Blessed we are to be born a human Thanks to dear God more than a ton To think, see and praise the protector Is my life's primary purpose nothing...
