I recently had the pleasure of dining at Moonrackers Restaurant in Mahabalipuram, and I must say it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. This restaurant has undoubtedly earned its reputation as one of the finest dining establishments in the area, and I can't recommend it enough.
From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a delightful ambiance. The interior design is tastefully done, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
The menu at Moonrackers is a culinary delight, offering a wide variety of dishes to suit every palate. The selection of seafood was particularly impressive, with fresh catches beautifully prepared and bursting with flavors. I had the pleasure of trying their tawa prawns, and they were absolutely divine. Each bite was succulent and perfectly seasoned, leaving me craving for more.
The service at Moonrackers was top-notch. The staff was attentive, friendly, and well-informed about the menu. They were more than happy to provide recommendations and cater to any dietary preferences or restrictions. I was impressed by their attention to detail and their commitment to ensuring a memorable dining experience for every guest.
Another standout aspect of Moonrackers is their commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It was evident in the quality and taste of each dish. The attention to detail and the skill of the chefs were truly remarkable. The presentation of the food was also a feast for the eyes, with each dish beautifully plated.

Read moreIt is one of the older joints in mahabs that serves seafood. Had been there 25 years ago with my girlfriend, again visited recenly for sake of nostaligia with wife (same girlfriend) and kids!
They have 2 restaurants side by side. We went to the older one (nostalgia remember), whereas the new ac dining place is much cleaner (reco this). We were taken to the terrace, which is converted to an ac dining area, done with a DIY vibes. The steps leading to it is narrow with painted art of the temples, a nice old world charm. The ACs were not working at the time due to power cut. So we sweltered out in the Oct noon heat for lunch for about 15 mins before the power came back. Its kinda cut off, since its on the terrace, no dedicated wait staff for this area, hence might not always be there if you need anything.
We were recommended the pepper crab. The crab was xl sized (brownie points for that). They'll give you a nut cracker, if you request them. The masala bit could have been more balanced, as we felt it was a bit greasy. The prawn fry was nice with a good portion size. The sweet lime soda was a disapointment, lot of excess sugar at the bottom of the glass.
The guys who run the place are friendly, but they need to do something to the place overall to attract repeat customers or tourists. The hygiene standards have gone up in the last 2 decades. Customers expect better wash area, seating, non greasy tables, plating, ac etc. You can be small, yet if the basics are done right, it has the potential to transform into a charming hole-in-the-wall...
Read moreWe went there for Lunch - Few things that really make me say that it’s not recommendable place to eat because:
Not very hygienic place table, not properly clean (I assumed the chairs where customers sitting as well) Flies everywhere - that you won’t feel comfortable to eat while straying away these flies. They offering seafood with EXTREMELY expensive price - this fish we got, can you believe it we paid for 3,500? I asked for steam veggies, and I am not sooo pleased coz the way they served and prepare it. Not so enticing to eat. Finally they serve the fish with full of spices, again not soo enticing to eat. I have no issues eating spicy food - but the quality of food (bad), I cant express further how disappointed we were with our dishes. Bill - of course, I think we ended up paying 3,900 for 1 bowl of rice 1 steam veggies 1 lt of water 2 Pepsi 1 7-Up
So yeah, we felt being ripped off by our Tour guide coz I think they get some commission to bring us here to have food. And other Indian restaurants we went to, not as bad as to compare to this one.
And not sure how the other photos shared here having a very clean and nice ambience when we actually visited this place, so unpleasant. Not that I am fuzzy customer, but hygiene is very important especially when it comes to food.
If your guide will bring you here, please try to ask other alternatives and make sure you check the reviews coz it will help you not only getting the good food but at the same time you’re paying the worth...
