I stayed here for one night in October 2019. Even though it’s called the “Chinese Temple,” it’s actually run by super kind Thai monks. My friend and I are both Chinese, we told them we heard it’s possible to stay overnight here, and they immediately offered us a room and even invited us to eat some dinner. Honestly, after a month of traveling in India, that meal was one of the best we had! So grateful 🙏

At night, the temple was really quiet and clean. Just the occasional bark from a dog. I really liked the peaceful vibe.

I’m from Xi’an, near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, where Master Xuanzang translated Buddhist texts. I came to Sarnath because I heard he studied here back in the day when he traveled to India.

There’s a sign at the temple saying it was originally built by people from Fujian, China, a long time ago. Now it’s Thai monks who are keeping it alive with so much kindness. I don’t know the full story, but it felt really touching: no borders, just people helping people. I wonder how those monks are doing now. Hope they’re...
