There's a lot to see, and if you are an archaeology or Buddhist history enthusiast and have got the time, it's worth a day of exploration. Let me summarize what you can explore here, along with some suggestions:

1. Dhamek Stupa: It's a huge ancient (5th AD) stupa as you can see in the photos, and the main attraction of Sarnath complex. Trust me, it's something, with intricate carvings and strange ancient writings (Brahmi) on its circular wall.

2. Monastery ruins: There are ancient monastery ruins which have been excavated from ground over the century (first by British, then by Indian government). I am not very familiar with the details, but there are some important artifacts and features like Ashokan pillars etc. (on the pillar ruins, there are writings in an ancient Brahmi language).

3. Buddhist Museum: Many important items that have been excavated from the site are stored in this Museum. A must-see place.

4. There are many more noteworthy places to visit nearby,. This includes a very large and beautiful Japanese temple with a sleeping Buddha, a Myanmar-style pagoda, a huge standing Buddha statue inside a Thai monastery complex, Sarnath Buddhist temple, and many more monasteries (we had to miss few due to time constraints, especially as we had seen lots and lots of monasteries in Bodh Gaya 2 years back).

5. International crowd: You will see lots of international tourists here, especially groups from South East Asia and Far East. You will even see entire groups from those Buddhist nations meditating and chanting on the lawns near the monastery ruins. Offers a great peek into Buddhist culture.

6. Neat and well-managed: The entire Sarnath complex is very neat and well-managed. You have ticket counters, online ticket option, wheelchairs, refreshment centers, shopping stalls at the entrance, and so on.
