Revisited Sarnath in February 2025. Once again our attention was immediately captured by the magnificent Giant Buddha Statue. It is located on the grounds of the Thai temple and Monastery. Upon entering the site of the Thai Temple, the statue is prominently visible, beautifully framed by two serene rectangular ponds the Gautam Buddha Kund and the Mahamaya Kund located in front of it. These ponds enhance the visual appeal with features like fountains, blooming lotus flowers, and elegant steel railings enclosing them. Adding to the serene environment are several small golden Buddha statues displayed in various postures around the main statue and the ponds. The statue stands at an impressive height of 80 feet and 9 inches, making it one of the the tallest Buddha statues in India. It portrays the Buddha making a hand gesture called the Dharmachakra Mudra, which symbolizes his first teaching or sermon delivered in Sarnath. The statue was built over a period of fourteen years, between 1997 and 2011. It was unveiled in 2011.
