National Awakening Museum is a building that was built as a monument of birth and the development of national consciousness and also the discovery of the first modern movement organization under the name Boedi Oetomo. Before becoming a museum , this building is a former medical school founded by the Netherlands under the name STOVIA abbreviated STOVIA or Medical school Bumiputera On the way, the building always switches function. The location of the museum is not far from Senen Market, exactly on Abdurrahman Saleh Road No.26, before RSPAD Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta.
Previously STOVIA was a physician school still developing under the name of The Java Doctor School which was founded in 1851 at Weltevreeden Military Hospital or what is now called Gatot Soebroto Army of Central Hospital. All of the campus faculty staff are from the same hospital physician. The teaching and learning activities were then moved alongside the military hospital on the initiative of HF rool the director until successfully completed on 1 March 1902. Due to rapid development, STOVIA moved from Kwini Senen area to Salemba which is now Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. The campus, which is located in Kwini since 1926, has been converted into a MULO educational place , at the Junior High and AMS evel, at the senior high school level.
Then, when Japan arrived in 1942-1954, the first building functioned as a prisoner of Ducth troops against Japan. Continued into the Indonesia independence period 1945 - 1973 the building was inhabited by families of Dutch and Ambonese soldiers.
Because of its high historical value, related to the birth of Boedi Oetomo on May 20, 1908, in 1948 was designated as the day of National Awakening. In addition, this building is also a witness of the birth of organizations of national movement, namely Boedi Oetomo, Trikoro Dharmo (Jong Java), Jong Minahasa, and Jong Ambon. As well as in this building are also some movement figures such as Ki Hadjar Dewantara , Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo, and R. Soetomo never gain knowledge. Therefore, in 1973 the government of DKI Jakarta Provice restored the and on May 20, 1974 together with President Suharto , was inaugurated as the National Awakening Building.
Unfinished, the rectangular building complex is made up of four museums, namely Budy Utomo of Museun , Museum of Women, Museum of Press and Museum of Healthy until finally on February 7, 1984 became the Museum of National Awakening. Was visited this Museum more than 4 times. This time, visiting with walkingtour. Several dioramas relocated made the story line between STOVIA and national awakening kinda mix. We can find several history from the posters, dioramas, monuments and dormitory rooms.
Facilities: wide museum area in separate buildings, clean rest rooms, hall that can be used for events, theather that shown the movie about history of STOVIA and national awakening in Indonesia.
The entrance has ramp for 🧑🏻🦽👩🏻🦽, I remember this is already available since 4 years ago during my last visit to this museum. Also access to other area has the ramp with handrails too. The rest room very wide for ♿. However not every area in this museum fit for 👩🏻🦽🧑🦽.

Read moreThis museum suppose to open at 0900 but we got luck they allow us in at 0830, better comes early in the morning due to car park is limited. This museum is good to get known our history. I strongly advice you to get tour guide that provided free as they able to tell the detail history, timelines, behind the story as well as activities they conduct that you will miss if you do museum tour at your own. Our guide today is Ms Yusti which knowledgeable and tell us in clear and interactive way (thank you Ms and Mr Security Guard). Most room is aircon so no sweat although we have to walk room by room. Seeing a place where history being made as well as diorama and infographic being presented makes us become part of it. For sure my child now know better the history that they read from school and see it with their own eyes as their foundations to create the great ones for future generation.
