This is an art gallery located across Gambir station and it's great! I was lucky enough to visit just as the renovations finished. There were a total of 3 exhibits, Kids Biennale 2025 (open until 31 July), NYALA: 200 Tahun Perang Diponegoro (open until September 2025), and the GalNas Permanent Exhibition.
It's such a shame that an excellent art gallery like this one has incompetent staff (especially the Kids Biennale and NYALA staff) and useless rules. The main issue with the staff has something to do with one of the rules. Apparently, you have to take off hats and masks inside the art rooms to show "respect" (which I think is ridiculous), which the staff are constantly reminding us about, in a RUDE WAY. I was, unfortunately, bothered quite a lot of times by them, as I was having a cough and had to wear a mask. I respect their effort for reminding visitors to abide by the "rules", but please be more observant and quickly conclude whether the person actually NEEDS to wear the masks or not.
However, the same can't be said for a certain staff member of the NYALA: 200 Tahun Perang Diponegoro exhibit. As usual, he was reminding everyone about the "masks & hats off rule", when I told him I had to wear my mask as I was sick. He didn't say anything back, just a very rude and uncomfortable stare. He kept doing it for the first few minutes until I got sick of it and went to confront him. Then, he decided to RUN AWAY from me?! THAT'S what you call an incompetent staff! Running away from your mistakes instead of admitting them? UTTER NONSENSE! Luckily, I managed to sketch his appearance (in case I were to actually report him), but I couldn't get his name on his nametag, as he was hiding it because HE KNEW I was onto him.
Conclusion? Please just abolish this rule. A rule is supposed to keep things in order, not to...
Read moreOne of my favorite art galleries in Jakarta. The location is right in front of Gambir Station and is available for cars and motorbikes. For motorcyclists, don't forget to bring your vehicle registration. In this gallery is divided into several buildings and has a very good and interesting collection. You can find the legendary paintings by Affandi here. Here you don't need to pay an entrance fee because everything is free. Simply fill in the guest list and leave the bag, you can already enjoy a very beautiful work of art. If you take the busway, you can get off at Gambir Stop 2 and cross using the pedestrian bridge. This place is perfect for those who are art lovers or who like to find an instagramable place. This gallery is a must visit if you come to Jakarta, especially those using trains.
Read moreI went to this gallery with my best friend. At that time, an architectural art exhibition entitled Prihal: Architecture of Andramartin was being held. The front yard of the National Gallery was converted into an exhibition area in the form of a wooden hallway with woven bamboo curtains covering the sides of the hallway. Light from outside penetrates between the woven bamboo curtains, while on the right side of the hallway, there are rows of photos of projects that Andra Martin has done. The exhibition area was held outdoors and also indoors. At the end of the exhibition, we could also bring home a postcard. It was astounding.
Besides that, this gallery also has an area for the permanent exhibition. There are two galleries differentiated based on the periodization of the art journey in Indonesia, both local and international works from various art genres. A unique collection of classic paintings and contemporary artworks arranged in appealing layouts complete with work descriptions in English and Indonesian. The condition of the room is also very calming with adequate lighting and a pleasant air-conditioned room, which adds to the calmness when in the room. Many photo spots are Instagrammable and, then another best part was the entry is free. Surely I would visit again after...
