Today I had my visit to Soltan Beygom House in Tehran. This Qajar-era mansion, dating back nearly two centuries, is attributed to Mrs. Soltan Beygom Shojaei — reportedly a relative of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. Built in the traditional style of old Tehran, with a central courtyard, wooden sash windows, stained glass, and delicate plaster and mirror work, it is a fine example of 19th-century residential architecture.
Walking through its halls, I was once again impressed by the craftsmanship and historic atmosphere. However, it was disappointing that only one room was open for visitors, while much of the house seems allocated to administrative staff and offices. Since the property is owned and renovated by Tehran Municipality’s Cultural Department, I believe it deserves better management and planning to make more of this heritage site accessible to the public.
Such treasures should not remain hidden behind office doors — they should be shared widely so visitors can truly experience the elegance and history...

Read moreSultan Begum's historic mansion, dating back 150 to 200 years, has a rich history that originates from the Qajar era in Iran. The mansion was initially owned by Mrs. Sultan Begum Shojaei, a relative of Naseruddin Shah Qajar. In 1312, she gifted the property to her child, Taghi Shojaei.
The architectural design of the mansion features a central courtyard, with the building's sides surrounding it. The entrance is strategically located on one side of the courtyard. Notably, the courtyard is situated below street level, giving it a sunken appearance. To access the entrance, visitors must descend 13 steps.
A small pond is positioned in front of the stairs, in the central part of the courtyard, which is a distinctive characteristic of Qajar-era mansions. Upon entering the courtyard, the plan-shaped building with its wooden windows and brick walls is an immediate...
