Roth House and garden is truly a secret garden in the middle of the city of Kilkenny, Ireland. It’s a very old walled garden, but you’d never know it was there unless you looked for it. It is behind a wonderful old house. This man accumulated the land and built this wonderful garden years ago, in the back of his home. Now it is open for the public to see for a small fee. First, you must go for a self-guided tour through the house then you come to this amazing walled garden. It’s not like a huge estate garden where everything is trimmed and perfect. This is more like a wild garden where plants can be natural and grow as they would like to and fall over and get entangled. There’s mixtures of so many different kinds of plants. There are some beautiful, trimmed trees and hedges and vegetable gardens and fruit trees, apple trees, a grape Arbor. It’s perfect place for birds and insects to do their thing. I was lucky to discover it on a nice sunny day and there were a few other people around, but it’s a perfect place to go and have a picnic. Here are some pictures of the house, that lead you to the garden and several videos of walking through the garden. The garden is only as wide as the house 70 feet maybe but it goes back forever several hundred feet. There is a small gift shop at the front and I believe you can buy plants there as well. A peaceful and tranquil place to visit. 🌞🦋🌻

Beautiful place to visit while in the Medieval City of Kilkenny. A historic monument with great gardens. "Rothe House is a unique Tudor merchant’s townhouse, built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden to the rear." "It is the only remaining example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland, and considered to be nationally significant because of the range of original post-medieval features that survive."

Rothe house and garden is well worth a visit. The young woman welcoming guests in the shop was a delight and we received a warm welcome and helpful information. The garden is beautiful in all seasons but we particularly enjoyed all the fall colors and textures, the herbs especially, the yellow pippins, the dried artichokes, and the many beautiful dahlias.

Rothe house is one of the places on the Medieval Mile in Kilkenny I thought would be worth a look for completeness sake, especially with so many incredible cathedrals and a castle along the strip, but it ended up being my favourite attraction. With a measly €5.50 entry fee I and an unassuming frontage I definitely wasn't expecting to spend 2 hours wandering around the estate and loving every minute. Rothe house is a late 16th century mansion built by one of the most powerful men in Kilkenny and inhabited by his descendants. The exhibit is broken down to 3 time periods (16th century, 19th century and prior to the 14th century) within the 3 houses that make up the estate. At the back of the property is a massive garden which appears out of nowhere and imbues you with an added appreciation to how wealthy the Rothe's were and also how much effort has gone into the restoration. There are enough relics and rooms to keep yourself occupied for a couple of hours if you want to take your time, but on the same token you could easily spend a few minutes in each area and still take a lot away from it. The whole experience is really well done and props to those who have gone to so much effort to make it look so authentic. Well...

DO NOT Miss out on visiting. 👍👍👍 What a spectacular place to visit in the heart of the city. A treasure find for us on our trip. Such a stunning house which is part of our heritage wonderful story and the gardens are breathtaking. All of the staff working there obviously love there job as they are so informative and friendly. Aoibhinn was our tour guide and she has to be the best tour guide we have ever come across anywhere we have visited worldwide. So knowledgeable and almost as if she lived in the house she made it come to life for us. What a wonderful member of staff. Kilkenny should be so proud of her. Thanks Aoibhinn, so delighted to have visited this property, probably one of the nicest places I ever visited.

Have change to give the staff a tip to show your...
