One of the interesting churches to visit in the Christian Quarter is the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer located just across from the Church of Alexander Nevsky and Muristan. Opening hours are from 10am to 5pm (closed on Sundays).

Note: While you can visit the church nave freely, there is an entry fee (NIS 15 per adult) to access the crypt, exhibition area and tower.

The church was built at the end of the 19th century upon the site of an earlier 11th century church as well as pre-Christian era building and city wall foundations. The church is operated by the German lead Evangelical jerusalem Foundation. It is a simple neo-Romanesque style building with a notable belfry tower which you can see clearly from much of the Christian Quarter.

The interior of the main church is simple, minimalist and quite reminiscent of Reformed Protestant churches you may have visited in Germany. You'll find a large and open nave with modest decor compared to the many ornately decorated churches in the Christian Quarter.

Of the sections of the church requiring paid entry, the exhibition area was unfortunately closed during our visit. However, there is a lovely outdoor courtyard and cafe area near the exhibition hall. This can make for a nice place for a break from sightseeing.

We enjoyed the quick walk through the crypt, accessed from the front of the nave near the exit to the courtyard and exhibition hall. Here you can see pre-Christian era foundations of ancient Jerusalem. This archaeological site is kept dark but there are lights and a couple of multimedia information stations with German, English and Hebrew information provided.

The highlight of our visit to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer was the tower. Here you climb 178 steps up and down a narrow spiral staircase to an observation area where you are treated to excellent 360 views of the Old City.

Note: The climb is a bit challenging and passing others going up and down is not easy. There are two resting floors along the way, which is helpful for those who need breaks.

Note: There are a fair number of church you can visit nearby including the important Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is no more than 2 minute walk from here. You can easily combine a handful of church visits in this area of the Old City.

Overall, we were pleased with our visit to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. It was disappointing that the exhibition area of the church was closed but the crypt was interesting and the views from the tower were as good as any other place we found in...

The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer is the second Protestant church in Jerusalem (the first being Christ Church near Jaffa Gate). It is a property of the Evangelical Jerusalem Foundation, one of the three foundations of the Evangelical Church in Germany in the Holy Land. Inside the bell tower of the Church of the Redeemer, a circular staircase of 178 steps offers panoramic views of Jerusalem from 40 metres up. It is the home to congregations that worship in Arabic, German, Danish and English.
