MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna — Attraction in Bologna

Nothing special at all and really quite disappointing. It didn’t start well, with the ticket seller just staring blankly at me waiting for me to speak, thought it would have been obvious I was there to pay to go and see the collection.

As pointed out in previous reviews there was nowhere to leave my coat and bag… there were 60 small lockers… all being fully used despite there being less than 20 people in the gallery.

After that I had no idea where to start, nothing was explained and the were no signs so I just headed towards a door where I was stopped and told that for that room I would need an extra ticket…. I didn’t bother because from what I could see of the contents I wasn’t going to be missing much and this was confirmed as I went upstairs and I could see down on the exhibition from the many windows.

Emperors New Clothes was the phrase that kept springing to mind as I wandered around the exhibits and read some of the flowery descriptions.

There were, however, some highlights, there’s a very good Keith Harring and a particularly excellent Gilbert and George and these alone were worth the entrance fee.

The main highlight for me was the superb top floor exhibition by Mary Ellen Bartley “ Morandi’s Books”…. There was an excellent video explanation of her work by the artist herself and she rescued the gallery from a Two Star review .

Of course my review is just the opinion of one person and what do I know?

This museum ist overrated. And I cannot understand that this is mentioned to be the most popular museum in Bologna. Also: the opening hours are from 3 to 7 pm. The door was open hours before. We entered the open door and instead of informing us that we have to make an appointment they just told us in harsh words that the museum is closed until 3 pm. NO information about this procedure anywhere! Any child is able to create a QR-code as a lead to a simple open source booking system in minutes, sorry.

Instead we came back to wait for 20 minutes in line wondering about the long discussions in front of us and all the visitors leaving angry without buying a ticket. When it was our turn, we realized: the staff had to tell every visitor personally about the obligation to make an appointment. Finally we came a third time on one single day to visit the MAMbo to come to the conclusion that it was a waste of time and waste of...
