Truly a wonderful museum! It tells the chronological story of Bologna from the time of the Etrusks to modern days in a very clear, informative way, not leaving out any of the numerous important events (political, military, economic, cultural or social), people or unique characteristics of the city. It really opens one's eyes to the major role this hidden gem of a city has played in shaping Italian and European history and culture throughout the years and makes you appreciate the city even more as you walk through it's streets. I have lived in Bologna for a year now and I'm a fool for not coming here earlier!
The exhibitions, in historically chronological order, are well designed and clearly themed and at some points make use of fun, interactive multimedia. Most (not all) signs and videos are in Italian, but there is an exquisite audio tour included in the ticket and each room has summary leaflets in multiple languages.
I can recommend this museum to anyone who is interested in history and wants to understand and connect to Bologna better, regardless of whether you're visiting or living here. I spent around 3,5 hours in the...
Read moreUnfortunately, this museum was very disappointing. As English speaking tourists, my friend and I felt so confused as all displays had only Italian descriptions. Each room did have a paper explaining the general history of the display in different languages, but this wasn’t enough information to understand what we were looking at. Also, it was frustrating to go find the corner where the paper was each time we entered a room (and there were a lot of rooms!) It felt as if we were at an Escape Room without any fun. As some reviewers mention, the museum presents history very creatively. However, visuals are not the sole purpose of a visit for a history museum. Information is kind if important! Needless to say, we left the museum feeling that our time and money was wasted, and wondering “what, in the world, did...
Read moreThe Museum of the History of Bologna was a great stop in our three-day stay in Bologna. I wanted to learn about the beautiful city.
Unfortunately, for me, as an English speaker, I felt like the audioguide did not provide a quality experience, bombarded me with facts and details, and did not give me the proper context for me to fully appreciate what I was looking at. Some of the quality attractions of the museum were not available yet or were in Italian only. Some parts of the museum were in disrepair or were confusingly laid out.
I don't want to give the wrong impression. The museum achieves what it sets out to do and for history buffs, or for those with a particular love of Bologna, I see this as a wonderful place to visit. But for me, a casual visitor, I did feel somewhat...
