If you must find a definition for this art museum, "hidden gem" would be the best. Not very much known to the ordinary tourist, and somehow suffering the competition with other famous art gallery as gli Uffizi in Florence or Brera in Milan, the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna housed a rich and very interesting collection of art. The paintings start from middle ages with gothic-driven art (XIII century), pass through the Renaissance, with some jaw dropping masterpieces of Il Francia, Guido Reni, Carracci, Raffaello and other great bolognese artists, finally reaching the XVIII century. One can really experience the evolution of painting through time, also thanks to the well organized visit path. A deserved shout-out to the newly reorganized Renaissance sector, extremely well presented and bearing some wonderful masterpieces from this period (some of them loaned from other museum). Read moreA mesmerizing collection of Italian art across the centuries with masterworks by Parmigianino, Raphael, Ludovico Carracci, Prospero Fontana, Lorenzo Costa, Tintoretto and Guercino, to name just some of my particular favorites. Also a bunch of Guido Reni paintings which are contemptible but people love his stuff so who am I to say?

The museum itself is a fascinating blend of modern architecture and the re-used spaces of what I believe was a convent but don’t quote me on that.
Well with at least 3 or 4 hours of your time some real stunning works that reward a dedicated look. The Ludovico Carracci paintings are truly stunning he was far more inventive and beguiling than Annibale’s often stilted and clumsy classicism.
