Giardino del Guasto — Attraction in Bologna

In theory a really interesting place, thick in atmosphere and resembling a specific idea in architecture and pedagogy. It really has a lot of potential to activate kids play, just from basic shapes. I only know concepts like this from playgrounds in Japan and hope they would spread further. When we visited the place we where quite disappointed. When entering the place you have to pass groups of Pushers wanting to sell drugs. In the park itself there where almost no kids but a lot of adults, most of them where smoking. Also the playground staff smokes in the playground. There where a lot of youngsters rolling weed/drinking, also pushers came to the playground trying to sell. Toys provided by the playground where mostly broken and there was no connection to montessori principles. Previous projects that happened in there just lying around randomly and where also broken.

Im not trying to seek for bad aspects of this place, it has a lot of potential and can really be an urban oasis. But I felt it really needs some guidance, a general idea or concept and some strict rules against dealers and substance consumption.

Il giardino del Guasto è un giardino pubblico il cui nome deriva dall'essere stato costruito sulle macerie di un importante palazzo nobiliare, Palazzo Bentivoglio, distrutto nel 1507.

Inaugurato nel 1975 su progetto dell'architetto Gennaro Filippini, il risultato dell'intervento fu un giardino sopraelevato, in cui la parte centrale è costituita da camminamenti in cemento affiancato da bassi muretti dall'andamento sinuoso. Si estende su una superficie di circa tremila metri quadri, di cui gran parte ricoperti di cemento e calcestruzzo.

Progettato come campo gioco sperimentale per bambini, è stato riaperto a partire dal 1998 grazie all'impegno di alcuni cittadini residenti, costituitisi in associazione.

Il camminamento sfocia in un'area completamente pavimentata in cemento che al centro degrada verso una fontana in forma di piccolo torrente (che scorre su un letto anch'esso di cemento). Ci sono tavolini su cui studiare o leggere, e piccoli giochi di concezione Steineriana. In estate i bambini popolano questo corso d'acqua artificiale giocando liberamente con i giochi e sono organizzate attività ricreative per i più piccini.

La terrazza affaccia sulla sottostante via Belle Arti, dominata da un tiglio e da un albero del rosario. Oltre i muretti che si sviluppano ai due lati del giardino si trovano due brevi scarpate alberate, accessibili e piantate ad alberi d'alto fusto (quercia rossa, carpino nero, bagolaro, albero di giuda, acero montano, ippocastano, gelso da carta,...

It is such a pity that a playground designed for kids, which is already not so common in bologna, is full of people smoking and dealing drugs. It was suggested by an italian friend but we were more or less disappointed. The idea is actually good that the kids can explore all the play possibilities by themselves here but now it is rather a hangout for teenagers or students. Our kid still enjoyed the afternoon...
