Nestled on the slopes of breathtaking alpine valley bathed in late November sunshine this felt like a garden of Eden. Gardens around old castle are designed and created in such fashions that there’s always something wonderful to watch or to be surprised by around next corner. For us it’s been good 3 hours we enjoyed there walking all of the possible routes. We didn’t miss the the high view bridges though - in my case I also didn’t miss the vertigo they brought.
My family and I paid a visit to the castle at the end of November because our parents were eager to see a temporary exhibit: killer plants and the green carnivores. They were not disappointed !! We’re not “Vegetal-World Savvy” but every tree, garden and flower is labeled and plenty of info is provided on the different species. You can admire an incredible variety of gardens and birds in a 12-hectare amphitheater. It is not just a botanical Gary, but a recreational attraction as well: there is a cafe, a restaurant, different activities to do, an outstanding museum (The South Tyrol Museum Of Tourism). Everything incredibly well-kept, curated in every detail, everywhere a pleasant smell How do we get there? We spent over three hours here .There are regular buses from the town centre to the gardens. The ticket prices are reasonable considering the size of the gardens. There is a huge variety of different themed gardens. All signs are in German, Italian and English. You can climb up to a viewing platform that has great views over the gardens and the surrounding area. The cafe by the pond is quite good but isn't particularly big so there could be a wait for tables in high season. Make sure you don't miss the iguana in the glasshouse! The castle is well signposted, we decided to stroll along the Sissi Path, which led us in a 30 minute walk from our hotel in Maya Alta. It is not too steep a footpath, easily to walk on even for children or...
Read moreAmazing gardens, and it tells a lot about all the plants there.
The only thing I didn't like is the "Botanical Underground".
What I expected: Some pretty plants which are lighted by colored lights.
I was so confused when i got to the entrance of the cave. It had some kind of queue system, and only 5 people could go in every 6 minutes, and the langues would rotate. The problem is: my German is awful, and I can't speak Italian. And it was only rotating between those languages. I thought: Sure, Italian is next, I'll just go in with that tour. I went in and thought: Wow! Scary dogs? This might be cool! Then the head started moving and made me scared of what would come. I went in, and there was some story I didn't understand, because it was in Italian. I thought Oh that's a intro of what will come. Apparently it's just some random stories with a pretty cool decor. Felt like a waste of time.
Tip: make it more clear of what it is. I had no idea...
Read moreWe were staying near Bolzano and had hiked the stunning Alpe di Suis for 3 days in a row when we were looking for something different. We decided a garden would be nice and looked for some around the area. When we read the reviews and pics we decided to give this place a try. I kid you not the reviews are spot on. My wife and I agreed these are the most beautiful gardens we have ever seen. The variety, amount, creativity, thoughtfulness and work put into these gardens is phenomenal. The only suggestion I would make is that if you are going in the middle of a hot summer day start to the left the Japanese gardens, bamboo forest, the terrarium, and around the world forest trail first because it is shaded and therefore cooler. The garden is kid friendly as well. If you like gardens you will be amazed and wish you had a garden like this near...
