I have visited museums in many countries around the world but found the National Archaeological Museum in Matera as good if not better than many of its contemporaries. The antiquities themselves showed quite clearly the evolutionary progress of mankind and they were very well displayed, never too many in a cabinet, well lighted and clearly catalogued. But it was the written panels around the walls, in both Italian and English together with maps and diagrams, that contributed so much to the overall learning experience. Where appropriate there were excellently presented replications of archaeological sites, but not too many as to overload the senses or distract from the overall learning experience. Next year, Matera will become a City of Culture. The staff of the Archaeological Museum must surely have played an important part in gaining that accolade. and they certainly deserve international recognition for their part in presenting a most enjoyable learning experience. I hope the Museum gains the reputation it so justly deserves. Mr & Mrs G. Hurley...

You travel to an amazing town, want to know its history and you go to a museum. And they advertise a whale fossil, which might also be cool. What you get is one bone and a video about whales (and nothing about that particular bone) and absolutely NOTHING about the town, actually, this museum is NOTHING about the town's history and apart from 1 knuckle nothing about the whale that they advertise. It's a SCAM, a tourist bait, absolute waste of one's money. Sincer not a single shop in town had not a single thing connected to anything Greek, the exhibition of the greek vases was not worth the time and money wasted. We DID get some lecture about history of town though, the next day, when we went across the gorge to the caves and learned more from people talking...

Well at the beginning i thought it was only a regular archaeological museum. But I have to admit that the things there were well maintained, clean, with clear explanation on each pieces. But then apparently I was lucky, because there was another installation at that time that talked about history of human race from Darwin's theory, to different ages of human race with full multimedia, visual and audio effect. It was amazing.

Loved it. It does need new money for new presentation, but the Neolithic pottery they have, is the prettiest of them all. People working there were awesome. Maybe add more dates to every piece. You have it in the beginning, but it's hard to remember what was when. The Neolithic pottery they have is so gorgeous. Ah and also some pretty Greek ones.

The museum is definitely worth a visit. It shows finds from local excavations. For me, the reconstruction of a prehistoric hut, oven and hearth is especially valuable. I haven't seen them in a museum in Italy yet. And of course, stories related to the ancient whale, whose remains were discovered in these areas are also a "must have".
