MUSA - Museo Universitario delle Scienze e delle Arti — Attraction in Naples

This is one of the best museums in Naples, and in the world. It's a must see if you visit Naples. Totally fascinating (and huge) anatomical collection of bones, preserved bodies, wax models, diseased organs and body parts, etc. The dates seem to span from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

This museum is appointment-only, but we found it very easy to make an appointment online. The museum is located within the Naples medical university building, and is a bit difficult to find, so leave a little early before your appointment.

When we arrived, the very helpful museum staff member checked our tickets and his list, and then gave us audio headsets for our self-guided tour. We spent a full hour in the museum, and in fact, were so lost in time that we didn't notice that we had probably made the staff member and security person wait a little longer than was polite to close the museum (they didn't say anything to us, but when I finally noticed the time, it was clearly the hour that they were getting ready to close for the day). The hours and days to visit the museum are somewhat limited, in my recollection.

The history of anatomical study in Naples and Italy in general is pretty amazing, and many of the deformities and diseases displayed in the museum no longer exist, due to medical advancements built upon by the early medical pioneers.

Probably not a place for kids or anyone who is queasy about death in general or...

A W E S O M E !!!! Such an amazing experience. It was absolutely free and one of the coolest things I've seen here in Naples. The back section can be a little tough to see if you are sensitive or faint of heart but overall it was a very cool, unique, and educating experience. If you are interested in science, anatomy, or the macabre you should definitely check this museum out. They also have an app that guilds you through the museum and has some audio to go along with it, which I found to be helpful. So if you are interested I would bring some headphones. Tricky to find, even once you find the building it's a warren inside as it's a uni. The arrows once you get inside point you in completely the wrong direction, so you're best to ask as we nearly h gave up after 10 mins of searching dead ends! An interesting collection of macabre anatomy and remains, however make sure you've got a strong stomach as can be quite unsettling. I'm a seasoned nurse and found some things quite nauseating. The labels were difficult to read in faded handwriting, albeit Italian, which would be fine to decipher if it was more legible. Limited opening hours but only took around 20 mins...
