Ahoy, we have come to the motherland of Pizza, Naples and one of its flagship experiences here at Gino Sorbillo Antica Pizzeria. First, avoid any confusion as you wander around Naples...there are a handful of places with "Sorbillo" in the name, including one just a few feet away from this one. Make sure you're at the one which undoubtedly has a long line, which has the word "Geno" in its sign with blue rays on the top. Odds are if you go to another "Sorbillo", the pizza will still be pretty good, as our guide told us, there really isn't bad pizza in Naples, especially not here on pizza street...but if you do want the authentic Gino Sorbillo experience, with its many many offerings on its menu (most places just have a few different pies), then this is the right place. Also, note there isn't a line...it kind of looks like there is, but if you want to dine in, head directly to the store where someone will put your name down...then go wait anywhere you want until they call you. We got there relatively early and were seated in about 10 minutes or so. The pizzas menu was extensive with many, many options, many suitable for us vegetarians. (and a vegan one too if you swing that way.) And, unfortunately, there is no menu in English (or on their website) so we had to do a lot of google translate work to wade through it...our server spoke perfect English and guided as a bit to something that was his "Summer Favorite" the Nonna Carolina, which was a pesto, cheese and tomatoes...it had a nice smoke to it and was unique. We also got the Margherita Buffala D.O.P. Pizza which he indicated was the classic one. It was our first pizza in Naples and we were surprised that it was not really a hand food but quickly learned this is how it's served throughout the city...not a mistake...pizzas are fork and knife foods...Once you get past that expectation, it's SUPER GOOD...a nice light and crispy crust and a big dollop of for di latte mozzarella in the middle...so original recipe Margherita here...just as it should be, especially if it's your first pie in Naples. We also enjoyed the wine, and then after dinner a couple of limoncellos helped us, especially during the heat wave that was happening both outside and inside. We went to a number of other pizza places in Naples during our stay. This was our first. It was really good. They had, by far, the most extensive choices for pizza toppings and variations, and we loved it. You'll always remember your first time.

We went there 4 times on our 7 days naples trip so i think i can give a good objective review on Sorbillo. Like you can read on the other posts, they work with a waiting list if it's full, which is pretty much all the time after 6pm (we went there mid october). In reverse this also means that if you go there for dinner a bit earlier, like around 5pm, you have a very good chance of not having to wait at all. Just plan your day accordingly. On 3 of the 4 days we went there at around 6pm and had to wait max 10min or not at all. 1 day we got a bit late so we decided to have it as takeaway, which worked perfectly too (10min waiting). Tables and cutlery are a bit spartanic - you get plastic cups for non alcoholic beverages. Nothing is fancy and they probably wanna keep it that way. Now to the most important thing, their pizzas: We tried about 6 different pizzas and our favorite was (very clearly) the Ripieno Aperto. It is basically a creamier version of the Diavola. The ingridients taste amazing on their own already - they are high quality, fresh, locally produced. But the combination on the pizza is an explosion of taste in your mouth. It has the perfect combination of sweetness from the tomatoes, saltiness from the ham and creaminess from the cheese. The dough is ultrathin and fluffy. We have two very good italian restaurants in my austrian hometown which make good pizzas but it still quite doesn't taste the same. I cut out triangle slices and folded the tip. This way you have maximum flavor with your first bite, it gets lighter with the second one and kind of neutralizes in your mouth with eating the dough - then you dp it all over again. Even though the Aperto was our fav, every other pizza was very good too. You can tell that the conception of the toppings is very well thought through. No ingridient overpoweres the other and works perfectly in taste with the rest. So all in all - is the pizza worth the hype? Imho - yes, it is absolutely unique. Would i wait 1.5h to go in? No - just takeaway or another day.

Before you continue reading, I must start with some important information - this was the best pizza I have ever had in my life. I had done some research about pizza in Naples and where was best prior to going, with Gino Sorbillo popping up often. I planned going there as part a day trip to Naples with one of my best friends on a holiday to Italy. We walked past the restaurant in the afternoon, planning to go later on for dinner, to see a long queue outside the door. I approached the lady sat outside and asked if I could make a reservation for later, which she was happy to accommodate and wrote my name down. We later arrived at the time of our booking, and after a little confusion (not helped by the language barrier) we were in shortly after the time reserved. There was also a huge queue outside the door, even bigger than around lunch time. Please, thus, be mindful that you may be waiting a while for a table! The staff inside were very friendly - we were seated and ordered our drinks and food very quickly, both also arrived very quickly. This pizza was incredible. We both got the Margeritta Extra. The quality of the pizza dough was outstanding, with the blistered crust adding extra flavour. The tomato base was incredibly fresh, and the cheese so flavoursome. An absolutely outstanding pizza - I would travel back to Italy just to have this pizza again. Also, this was the cheapest pizza I had during our stay in Italy at €6, and hands down the best! It is definitely a knife and fork pizza, which is not a negative, just something to bare in mind if you love a crispy base/holdable pizza slice. Please, if you love pizza, especially Neopolitan pizza, go to Gino Sorbillo's, I could not recommend it enough.

BEST PIZZA I’VE EVER HAD! Would really love to give them 5 stars, however had to knock it down to 4 for the chaos of the seating and ordering process. An employee sits outside of the door taking names. She takes your first name and the number of people in your party. She, however, does not call out names. Periodically, another employee takes her list and brings it inside. They call out names using a handheld microphone. The sound quality is comically atrocious. You really need to pay attention to hear your name being called. If you miss it, your name is immediately crossed off the list. If you have a complicated name, I recommend picking something short and recognizable. Parties of 1 were seated almost immediately. Parties of 2 were easy too. Any larger parties had to wait. We, a party of 2, arrived around 6pm and were seated about 10-15 min after arriving. The next level of hilarity was ordering. The menu is completely in Italian and we could not find an English menu online. Using our best abilities (I am fluent in Spanish), we ordered red wine (they offer by the glass of 500 mL) and 2 pizzas - margarita buffula DOP (margarita with a sphere of mozzarella in the center) and diavvola (like spicy pepperoni, featured in my photo). Perhaps, we should have looked at the menu ahead of time when we had WiFi… The service was slower than American standard but great for European standards. The waiters spoke English and treated us respectfully. Again, this was the best pizza I’ve ever had!! So long as you know what to expect with the process of getting a table and ordering, you could have the best pizza of your life too.

Totally worth the hype? Getting a table: The wait can get really long around lunch times, and the process of actually getting a table is annoying. Make your way up to the reservation desk right outside the entrance (you’ll need to get through the throngs of people waiting around; they’re waiting for their reservation to be called, not waiting in line to actually be seated). Then, join the crowd of waiting people and listen carefully for the very soft microphone announcing reservations. The food: The menus are long and only in Italian. If you don’t understand Italian, I recommend taking a look at a translation while you wait. There are plenty of vegetarian options and two vegan options on the menu (Anche Vegana, marinara). Note: the anche vegana does NOT have vegan cheese; the topping is grated tofu so adjust your expectations accordingly. If that sounds gross to you, just order the fabulous marinara instead. We ordered the marinara, the anche vegana (with the tofu) and a vegetarian pizza with ricotta and mozzarella. The dough really is unparalleled, and this really was one of the best (if not the best) Neapolitan style pizzas that I’ve ever had. My partner felt similarly about his pizza as well. Overall, I was pretty skeptical seeing people’s reviews about this being the best pizza they ever had. However, this place really does live up to the expectation! If the wait times or conditions aren’t up your alley, there are plenty of excellent pizzerias a stone’s throw away.
