Nicolaci Palace — Attraction in Noto

Not as beautiful nor impressive as I had expected Following the very good reviews here, I was expecting more, much more. But perhaps because of these expectations I was disappointed. So if you go there, l don't expect that much so you'll enjoy the tour. The entrance fees are not expensive at all so nothing really to risk, unless your time is limited and then I would recommend better to start with the Cathedral and after a walk on the main street have a cake or a granita at Caffe Sicilia, which is a must in Notto. Il materiale informativo che viene consegnato all' ingresso racconta in modo sintetico ma esaustivo la storia dei Nicolaci e di questa dimora sontuosa, costruita dalla famiglia come spavalda risposta alla discriminazione subita da parte della nobiltà locale. I Nicolaci infatti non erano nobili, ma fecero fortuna fino a diventare la famiglia più ricca di Noto e vollero erigere questo palazzo come simbolo del loro nuovo status. Fu loro negata la possibilità di risiedere nella via riservata alla nobiltà, pertanto scelsero una strada laterale e decorarono la casa con una tale opulenza da dimostrare che, nonostante l'origine borghese, erano in grado di superare i loro concittadini per ricchezza e grandiosità. Nelle sale del palazzo, i soffitti affrescati e i pavimenti originali fanno da cornice ad arredi che tentano di ricreare l'atmosfera dell'epoca in sale tematiche (del fumo, della musica, del biliardo...). Non dimenticare di osservare nel dettaglio le celebri mensole dei balconi prima o dopo la visita e consiglio anche una sbirciata alla vicina biblioteca pubblica, a sua volta impreziosita da pavimenti in piastrelle originali dell'epoca restaurati e che conserva in teche protettive alcuni antichi esempi di stampa a caratteri mobili. Il costo dell'ingresso è stato di circa 4€. A Palazzo Ducezio sono acquistabili anche biglietti cumulativi con prezzo totale ridotto per l'ingresso al palazzo in questione + Palazzo Nicolaci + Teatro Comunale. Noi ci siamo limitati a visitare questi ultimi due con ingressi singoli, ma se si è interessati anche alla sala di rappresentanza del Municipio il biglietto...

Thanks to the prosperity of their business they managed to build a Baroque-style palace, richly decorated with unique architectural details. The most famous are the balconies facing the street and the central square of the city. Against a ticket of several euros you can also see the courtyard palace. It hosts exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events in Noto. Interestingly, the frescoes, large and chunky chandeliers, are proving to be of interest.
