Horrible service!!!!

We bought an Orvieto Carta Unica and checked at the Orvieto Underground at what time we need to come to the tour. The woman in the Orvieto Underground’s didn’t bother to check our Green certificate or the Carta Unica, and neither did the guide once she met the group. The guide just took the entire group to the entrance to the caves. Only then she decided to check the ticket. Having found out that our Green certificates was not checked in the office she refused to let us in despite the fact that we paid for the tour and it wasn’t our mistake at all.

We suggested we go to the office and get the certificates checked (it would take us up to 5 mins to and back) but she refused.

So, we came to Orvieto for one day, paid for the tour and couldn’t make it because of the negligence of the office worker and the guide of the Orvieto Underground.

Not recommended at all. Just go to the museums, you can visit the underground caves in the Pozzo della...

Horrible experience with the official ticketing for the Orvieto underground. Like other reviews, the lady at the ticketing counter was dismissive and unhelpful. My parents were running just about two minutes late for the tour, and our tour guide Anastasia said she could wait… but after saying she could wait, she immediately walked away from the first gate. By the time my parents reached which was exactly two minutes later, she already walked off so far with the group to the entrance of the underground and refused to open the gate for them. My parents had to miss the tour and we wasted 16 euros.

The tour was also underwhelming. Whenever there were questions asked about Etruscan architecture pre-Roman times, her answer was always ‘We don’t know much because the Etruscans didn’t leave written records’. Surely the archaeologists must have some theories etc that could be shared, but nothing. Was terribly boring and could have read the info on Google. Do...

Typical for Italy... No proper hours of tours on the website, not in Google maps. There was only tour at 16.00 and we were on parking at 16.05 so too late, thus we even wandered in front of the entrance making pictures from terrace, when some group moved inside at 16.19. We even wondered why it's 19 min late but well... possible. Then we came in to buy tickets for next tour - at 17.15 - and it turned out English tours have completely different hours NOT MENTIONED anywhere!!!! It seems there was a tour at 16.15 which was in English amd the last one... So we said we can join any other tour especially that we just drove over 150km one way, just to Orvieto, for the tour... The possibility to join Italian tour is not there. Fully booked and not possible to join. So I am completely dissatisfied, wasted whole day, and WILL NEVER return to Orvieto and never here. It seems Umbria is not...

Part of the Orvieto Carta Unica (9 museums and historical sites in one entry pass), the guided tour at Orvieto underground is fantastic. The history of these carved out spaces from Etruscan times, through medieval uses and reuses up to 20th century use as bomb shelters, is remarkable. Our guide, Marta, was extremely engaging and did a terrific job of explaining the history. She painted eloquent pictures of what it might have been like for miners in the tunnels. The history of "pigeonholes" was eye-opening, and the explanation of why pigeons weren't present now in these spaces was surprising (spoilers - predation). Some spaces are small and some stairs irregular, but again, Marta outlined what was coming each time. Whether you choose to get the Carta Unica and aim for all, or just choose a few, Orvieto underground is well worth considering!

Fascinating place. Great to understand the systems and procedures the people had in the Middle-Ages against a siege. The water supply for Orvieto comes from outside the city walls via natural springs. In a siege these are not possible to access. You will learn on this tour how they provided for the community. Plus you learn how to have an ongoing supply of food. All because the Romans knew how to make concrete and the essential element, cement. Pozzolana is a reactive siliceous material, found naturally as volcanic ash, that is added to cement. Anyway, very interesting. On a hot day this place is a great place to go :) If you like history and human ingenuity then go on this tour.
