ORATORY OF SAN MICHELE — Attraction in Padua

If you want to enjoy fresco paintings in a very relaxed and quiet spot within walking distance of the bustling centre of Padova, this is your spot. Lots of detail and interesting interpretations of a number of often portrayed biblical scenes and themes. I specifically enjoyed the details in the annunciation: the Holy Ghost peeping around the door, the floor, the textiles hanging over a rail, the well made bed, the chair in the corner so like the one my parents owned, Maria’s expression, the books in the back. And on the wall next to it four figures that might be related to the rich donor, portraits so fresh that you might have seen them walking down the street. Questo piccolo oratorio rientra a far parte di quella cerchia di edifici padovani che conservano preziosi cicli di affreschi del Trecento. Tra questi, però, è forse il meno interessante, sia per l'estensione della decorazione che per la qualità dei dipinti. Ovviamente non va paragonato con capolavori quali la Cappella degli Scrovegni, l'Oratorio di San Giorgio o il Battistero del Duomo, perché è di fatto una piccola chicca. Nonostante ciò, non mi ha comunque colpito particolarmente, forse per le dimensioni davvero ridotte (si entra e ci si trova subito di fronte la parete di fondo) o per l'incompletezza del ciclo pittorico.
