The Temple of Apollo is definitely one of the most important buildings on Ortigia, facing the part where the island connects to Syracuse. In the sixth century BC, it was born here as the world's earliest stone-pillared Doric temple, and it presents the characteristics of the transitional period of Greek temples from wooden structures to stone structures. The entire temple is in the form of a long and narrow rectangle, from the continuous stone pillars around the porch on the outside to the structure divided into three inner halls by two groups of stone pillars, which can represent the architectural characteristics of the temple at that time. address: Largo XXV Luglio, Siracusa SR How to get there: Take the Siracusa dAmore to the island of Ortigia, just across the bridge from Piazza Pancali, which can be reached on foot.

I recently visited the Temple of Apollo in Syracuse and was thoroughly impressed by its historical significance and architectural grandeur. The ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient Greek civilization and provide a unique atmosphere that transports you back in time. However, I did notice that the information board is quite damaged from the sun, making it difficult to read. Additionally, there isn't sufficient information around the site to fully understand its rich history. Despite this, the site itself is awe-inspiring and well worth a visit. A little more investment in informative signage would make this experience even more enriching for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Overall, a must-see when in Syracuse!

The site is well-preserved, and the surrounding area is beautifully maintained, making it a perfect spot for history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike. The information plaques provided insightful details about the temple's history and significance, enhancing the overall visit. Standing amidst such an ancient grandeur was awe-inspiring, and the views of the surrounding landscape were spectacular. Highly recommend adding this to your travel itinerary – it's a gem you won't want to miss!

Well worth the visit. I can't stand touristy pap but this is worth a wander. Contrary to many reviews there are shady spots to hide away and the adjacent gardens (in a small ravine at the eastern end of the line of temples (near entrance) is pretty and secluded. Recommend plan to arrive first thing to avoid crowds / heat and maximise photo opportunities. 2 hours will suffice if you are a been there done that kind of person but a day will be required to relax in the ravine and walk the full circuit including museum. Good opportunity for a cost saving packed lunch trip.

On the Syracuse island of Ortigia and only five hundred meters (approximately 6 minutes by foot) away from the ancient temple of Athena that became integrated into a Christian Church and is now the site of the Cathedral of Syracuse, are the remains of the ancient Temple of Apollo. Unfortunately, only ruins remain. However it is still an important archeological site, as the temple was build in the beginning of the 6th century BC and it is thus the most ancient remaining Doric temple in Sicily.
