In total, we visited eleven restaurants across multiple cities during our Sicily holiday and, unfortunately, MOON was a disappointment - since the hosts seem to read reviews carefully, I will try to give constructive feedback without any intention to offend anyone.
First of all, we love vegan food and cook a lot of vegan food ourselves, such that we were excited to enjoy a professional vegan food experience in Sicily, being highly ranked by previous travelers - to our great surprise, though.
Service In general, the staff seemed somehow uncoordinated. First, one person guided us to the table, which we had reserved, minutes later, other staff told us to leave the table since it was reserved and we had to explain the situation. An unpleasant beginning. Later, no one followed up with us regarding wine or food, this might have been helpful. After the main course, the owner asked about the food, we honestly said it was only ok, which she literally just accepted, being very surprised, not asking about why or what was the problem. The staff brought the check twice - maybe the service could be improved by better communication.
Atmosphere The restaurant is located in the heart of Ortigia, has very nice street tables with welcoming and warm lights, and the interior looks very beautiful. We considered the music as rather stressful (electronic with heavy bass). In total, a mixed experience.
Wine The wine is considered to be a great Grillo and was on the upper end of whites on the wine list. Unfortunately, it was not served cold (22C) and corky. First, we thought the odd flavor/ taste is due to the high temperature and it needed to breathe first. Since we really wanted to taste this wine for a long time, we therefore accepted anyways - but unfortunately, it did not change after it was cooled down. We would have told but not given the opportunity since nobody followed up with us during our stay.
Food To our regret, the food was rather a disappointment. We had the Caponata, quinoa salad, seaweed pasta and ravioli - expecting a “wow” effect we already had many times with vegan food in the past. Unfortunately, it did not happen. The food was not well seasoned, lacking acidity, herbs and composition. The quinoa salad, for instance, consists of quinoa, olive oil, pomegranate seeds, and planed red cabbage. Period. Healthy food alternatives (also some vegetarian, thus not only vegan, but mainly) we explored e.g. in Germany, the UK, and Norway, were in a different league. We left after the main, dispensing desert, and went to...
Read moreWhat a wonderful experience! First of all, the staff in this restaurant is very passionate and informative about the dishes and wines/cocktails. The vegan homemade cheeses were very tasty, i especially liked the harder more flavourful ones, the milder hemp ricotta cheese could have a bit more flavour/seasoning in my opinion. The portions were nor big but it is understandable considering the work and time for fermantarion etc it takes to make them. We then tried the vegan burrata on a bed of salad and fresh tomatoes and wow; this was very creative and innovate and super tasty! This is apparently with fermented soy yogurt snd and almond-cashew cheese combined together inside a ricepaper skin. This dish is not on the menu but it definetely should be as it is very impressive and unique! The vegan carbonara and lasagnetta were super hearty and delicious and the "arrosto fuori di testa" was also yummy! The texture of the the soy medaillon is so meaty and satisfying. As a dessert we took a pistacchio tarte that was absolutely creamy and rich! The wine the waitor suggested was super tasty snd light snd the cocktail selection is also very unique and creative. This restaurant is a must for vegans/open minded vegan food lovers, definetely a highlight if my Sicily trip, Ihope to...
Read moreIt‘s hard to find the right words to describe the vegan excellence brought to you by Moon. We spent four nights in Siracusa and came back to Moon for dinner every night - there‘s just so much to try and enjoy. The way the flavors come together in each dish is so unique, tasteful, honestly a 11/10. Whether it‘s traditional Italian dishes, such as the Spaghetti Carbonara as vegan perfection or something more fancy like the „Trust Me“ - you just can’t go wrong! What really impressed me is the fact that everything is homemade, original, sustainable, so fresh and not at all processed (which is pretty typical when it comes to vegan cheese and meat substitutes at other restaurants). Moon creates magic out of simple things like cashews and vegetables. The vegan cheese platter will blow your mind. I’ve tried many different vegan cheeses in the last years and this is by far the best. I wish Moon would sell and ship the cheeses, so that I could enjoy them more often. So special.I could go on gushing about the desserts but I‘ll tell you this instead: If you‘re in Siracusa, don‘t miss out on this gem! I won‘t forget this place, the food and also not the incredibly kind, enthusiastic and lovely staff that work there. Moon truly is one of a kind - go see for...
