There are two reasons to visit this historic site: the stunning natural beauty and the star fortress. The fort was constructed in the second half of the 19th century by the Tokugawa bakufu. Its design was inspired by the star forts constructed in Western Europe after the advent of the use of gun powder in warfare. Specifically, Takeda Ayasaburō, the architect of Goryōkaku sought his inspiration from the Marquis de Vauban, who constructed several star forts in the 17th century in France for Louis XIV. Star forts were first constructed in Italy to strengthen the defences of a position: the star shape increases multifold the number of men and guns that can be positioned on the fortification. It was interesting to see the fortress from many different locations: at ground level, from above--from the top of the tower--and from several positions in-between while in the tower. I would visit this site again given the opportunity. It is family friendly. There are restrooms in the park and in the tower structure, where there is also food, drinks and more.
We visited in early May, and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. So many trees, and so many blossoms. It was one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Even if you are unable to visit during cherry blossom season, the fort and grounds are worth seeing, as well as the panoramic city view from the tower. The tower features statues of the historical figures associated with the fort as well as photographs, intricate miniatures and a lot of historical information although most of it is in Japanese. Like other parks and sites in Japan, it would be beautiful throughout the year as each season features...
Read moreWent to the park twice towards end of April during its full cherry blossom week(Once is just NOT enough!), words cannot describe its beauty…. What’s so unique and spectacular about the cherry blossom viewing experience at this place you can’t get elsewhere is that the layout of the park and the positioning of the cherry trees.
The park’s been built into a shape of 5 stars, and along each point of the star, there’re approx. 3 story tall mounted ridges where cherry trees are planted on top of the ridges as well as on the ground level underneath the ridges, so as you walk along the top of the ridges, you get a sense of being surrounded by cherry blossom 365 degrees above, on your eye level and below, a true 3D experience. Anyway, as I said, it’s an experience beyond words. So enjoy...
Read moreIt is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Hokkaido in the spring. The sheer beauty of the cherry blossoms, combined with the park's historic charm, make it a truly unforgettable experience. What I found most impressive was the sheer number of cherry trees - it's estimated that there are over 10,000 trees within the park! This creates a truly immersive experience, with petals gently falling all around you as you take in the serene atmosphere.
Beyond the cherry blossoms, the park also features several historic buildings and shrines that are well worth exploring. The Goryō Shrine, in particular, is a highlight, with its striking vermilion torii gates and...
