The Nu-no-Mon (Nu Gatte) is the only three-floored yagura-mon gate (a gate with a tower set on top) in the castle. It occupies an important place that acts as a barrier to the series of terraced baileys that link to the slopes of Himeyama. All wooden parts of the doors of this solid gate are clad in black iron attached with large dome-headed tacks. The second floor of the guard tower contains hidden stone drops that allow defenders to drop stones onto enemy soldiers directly below the gate, and make it possible to observe and fire at all those who enter the gate. A high stone wall with a fan-shaped curve juts out in front of the gate, creating an L-shaped path that provides improved defensive capabilities. The path that leads from the Nu-no-Mon (Nu Gate) to the keep is known as the lower road, while the path that leads from the Harro-Mon (Ha Gate) through the Ni-no-Mon and Ho-no-Mon (Ni and Ho Gates) to the keep is called the higher road.

When seen from the side, the pitch of the corner of a high stone wall increases towards the top. Due to their resemblance to an opened folding fan, walls that curve in this fashion are known as ōgi-no-kōbai or "fan curve of stone walls." The higher a stone wall is, the greater the pressure on the stones inside, which can lead to the wall collapsing. To ensure that a wall can withstand such pressure, the pitch at the foot is comparatively gentle while the upper part is made with a steep pitch that is almost vertical, allegedly to prevent enemies from scaling it. Corners are made of rectangular stones that are stacked alternately on their long and short sides. This method of construction is known as sangi-zumi (trimmed style stone walls) because the rectangular stones have the appearance of counting rods (sangi). Sangi-zumi construction was perfected from the late 16th to early 17th centuries, when it became possible to construct high...
