Karakuri Exhibition Museum (Karakuri Tenjikan) — Attraction in Inuyama

A fascinating place to explore Japan's long history of mechanical puppetry is the Karakuri Exhibition Museum in Inuyama. からくり人形の博物館です。有名な茶運び人形や指南車、弓曳童子など色々なからくり人形を見ることができます。 からくり人形のメカニズムもすごいのですが、私が感心したのは、からくり人形の部位を造るときに、木の特質によってそれぞれ使い分けているということです。例えば彫りやすく耐久性のある檜は顔・手・足に、堅くてねばりのある樫は芯棒に、堅くて湿気に強い桜は胴枠・カムに、堅くて重い花梨は歯車に、といった具合です。これは長年、木と共に生きてきた日本人の経験と知恵によるものだと思います。 からくり人形の技術だけでなく、こういう知見も後世に伝えたいですね。

追記 久々に来てみたら、場所が移転して建物がリニューアルされていました。展示品やコンセプトは以前とほぼ同じでしたが、からくり儀右衛門こと田中久重の万年時計のレプリカや万年時計のからくりを示した「自動割駒式時計の仕組み」は以前はなかったように思います。万年時計には興味があるので見れて嬉しかったです。 しかし私が今回一番印象に残ったのは入口にあった国立科学博物館の鈴木一義さんの「からくりが繋げるものづくりの心、知恵と技術」という一文です。それによると、驚いたことに江戸時代には「新規御法度」という法令によって、技術の新しい改良が禁止されていたというのです。しかもその法令を出したのは「享保の改革」で有名な八代将軍の徳川吉宗です。吉宗は一般的に名君と云われていますが、こんな法令を出していたなんて本当に驚きました。もっとも吉宗は自分の政治方針は「諸事権現様定め通り」と宣言し、すべてを「旧に復する」と言ったので、ある意味その通りとも言えますね。 このような困難な条件下にもかかわらずからくりの創意工夫に取り組んだからくり職人たちの努力精進は本当に称賛に値すると思いますが、為政者がこのような法令を出しているのを見ると、八幡和郎さんが言っている通り、江戸時代はやはり「停滞の時代」だったと言わざるをえないと思います。 250年に及ぶ平和な時代を築いた反面、世の中が変わることを恐れて日本人の可能性すら摘み取ってしまった家康の功罪を...
