Do yourself a favor and make time for the beach while in Kamakura—it’s the perfect way to balance out all the temple-hopping, shopping, and eating. People often overlook the fact that Kamakura is a seaside town, but the coastline is an experience in itself. Walk along the firm, wet sand, take in the rhythmic sound of the waves, and watch surfers and windsurfers dance with the ocean. It’s a reminder of nature’s vastness and your own smallness in the best way possible. We lucked out with a sunny late-November day and a nearly empty beach, making it feel like our own private slice of tranquility. We spent over an hour picking out quirky stones, chatting, and soaking in the calm surroundings. Sometimes, the simplest moments are the most memorable. About other reviews stressing how dirty the place is, I’ll say it is not perfect white beach of the Caribbean, but we did not see any big pieces of trash. I’m sure during the warm season, this place is more crowded and potentially more hectic and dirty, however November vibe is good.

I live within close distance to this beach and am a resident of Kamakura city. If the city spent as much money cleaning the beach and maintaining infrastructure there as they do on the crotchety old security guys harassing foreigners for having tattoos, I’d be more apt to bring my friends to this beach. When friends from overseas visit Tokyo and we go to the beach I never take them here, because inevitably the high-strung security will harass us. And since my tourist friends don’t speak English, they get even more upset and angry and aggressive. I thought the lessons learned from Zushi losing tourism thanks to excessive strictness would’ve been applied to Kamakura when tourists began to return post-corona. Instead I’ve got to go to city hall and complain on the regular that the security are making it very hard to enjoy the day at the beach. Especially when there’s an abundance of garbage and silt in the water and the river seawall is broken causing a massive diversion in the river.

I was very excited to hang out in the city and then chill on the beach for the day. When I arrived, all three beaches in this area were disgusting. Trash everywhere. It felt like I had left Japan and stumbled upon some post apocalypse beach in a 3rd world country. I was hesitant to even get my feet wet. Unsure how this was allowed to happen in such a pretty area.
