PROS ➕ 500+ unique statues

CONS ➖ None

Date visited: 05/04/2024

This site is separated from the main temple and requires a small fee to enter. Additionally, only a limited number of people are allowed inside at one time. We paid the fee and joined a short line, waiting to enter the holy site like pilgrims before the Holy Grail.

The statues are smaller than life-size; each depicts a different expression and is unique from the others. They are placed closely together along a stone path that splits and loops within the perimeter of the site. Moss, lichen, and all kinds of weather damage appear on every one of the many faces. I could see offerings from past visitors—mostly coins, but also charms and small trinkets.

Since the site was far from any busy roads, it was quiet and serene within. I felt calm and carefree, watched over by many a...

You have to pay extra into see these "500 Disciples of Buddha". The ticket incorporates entry into Iemitsu's birthplace, too. These statues all have different facial expressions. There is also the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac to be found amongst the statues. They say if you find the statue of the animal of the year you were born, you will have...
