A blissful walking experience, just hold on tight to the purse strings: you will find it hard not to spend money from the very first shop you come across in this lovely Bikan quarter. I am a shopaholic and had to restrain myself with difficulty. Managed to do it 60% successfully only because there was was so much to photograph. Love the bustling energy in the whole area.

There are many restaurants around but we did not go to the highly rated ones, we picked an unobtrusive looking one and very glad we did as it was a family run Izakaya: Mikaku. Loved the food. I find such restaurants all around the cities I travel to and try them out. They have different taste to their cooking compared to big restaurants.

Look out for people dressed in traditional costumes who walk around leisurely, like tourists 😉 Oh there are a few shops where you can rent clothes and walk around in them for a fee and specific time.

Enjoy the special area around the canal as you will see a boat with passengers “sailing” gently up and down with a boatman at the end. Very picturesque!

I loved all the antiquity of these old houses, shops and food. Very glad...

It was amazingly appealing. I took a train from Takamatsu to Kurashiki. It took less than one hour and thirty minutes. It was very convenient. There were lockers at the station so you could leave your heavy bags there if needed. I kept one of the bags in the locker so that I didn’t need to burden myself when walking around Kirashiki. The historical quarter was not far away from the station. Following the signs, you could easily reach there within fifteen minutes. There were shops and restaurants along the river. There were also many traditional wooden houses and you could take a boat ride along the river in a relaxing manner. Some people would put on a kimono strolling around the historical area. When I was strolling around the area, I was quite surprised when I saw a museum about Igarashi Yumiko. She was the illustrator of Candy Candy, a comic in the 1970s. If you are a big fan of hers, you should visit the museum! After that, you could also go to the outlet which is right next to the station, Mitsui Outlet Park. It was not big but if you like shopping, it can be another...

Historia Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

Ochrona dziedzictwa: W latach 60.

Charakterystyka i atrakcje

Wiele z tych magazynów zostało przekształconych w muzea, galerie sztuki, sklepy i kawiarnie.

Ohashi House: Jeden z najważniejszych zabytków dzielnicy, Ohashi House to rezydencja zbudowana w stylu machiya, która kiedyś należała do bogatej rodziny kupieckiej. Dom ten oferuje wgląd w życie i kulturę kupców z okresu Edo.

To doskonałe miejsce, aby poczuć atmosferę dawnych czasów i zakupić lokalne wyroby rzemieślnicze.

Festiwale i wydarzenia

Uczestnicy przebrani w stroje z okresu Edo biorą udział w paradach i inscenizacjach historycznych.

Have you heard of the Venice of Japan? Only 15mins away from Okayama by train, you can find this incredibly well preserved town with its picturesque canals: Kurashiki 🛶 Once an important rice distribution town during the Edo Period, today the traditional warehouses have been tranformed into cafés, museum, galleries, shops and restaurants. In the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, you can find unique local specialties in terms of cuisine as well as handicraft while strolling along the canals. We arrived pretty late in Kurashiki which gifted us with no crowds and a stunning sunset among the backdrop of the traditional houses 🥹 No longer a hidden gem, Kurashiki gets pretty crowded most days. If you are not interested in visiting the museums, you should visit on a Monday for fewer crowds, as the museums are closed on that day. 📍 You can reach Kurashiki from Okayama in 15mins by local train. It's also possible to do this as a day trip from Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima! Make sure you arrive at JR Kurashiki Station and not the Shin-Kurashiki Station -which is 9km away from the town center.
