This temple was commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the same guy who built Osaka Castle) to honor his mentor Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga was a mentor and superior to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi started his career as a retainer and a low-ranking foot soldier under Nobunaga, who was a major daimyo and a key figure in the unification of Japan during the late Sengoku period. Over time, Hideyoshi rose through the ranks due to his skills and achievements on the battlefield and in diplomacy. Nobunaga recognized Hideyoshi's talents and promoted him to higher positions. After Nobunaga's unexpected assassination in 1582 at the Honnō-ji Temple by his own general, Akechi Mitsuhide, Hideyoshi quickly avenged his lord's death and subsequently continued Nobunaga’s work of unifying Japan, eventually becoming one of the most powerful and influential figures in Japanese history. Toyotomi Hideyosi founded this temple for Oda Nobunaga. 1583年に豊臣秀吉が主君である織田信長のために創建した。 There is a tomb of Nobunaga and his family. 信長とその一族の墓がある。 There is "artesian well" that was dug out of a Korea stone, Kato Kiyomasa brought back from Korea.
