Please come to this place if you are in Kyoto. They close at 5pm, me and my husband rushed via cab over around 430pm and arrived perhaps slightly before 5pm. As the next day we are leaving Kyoto and not sure when’s the next time we will be back. We tried both shops, two different shops, one left one right, we can’t read jap, so I only differentiate the shops by their tea pots 🤣 and i personally prefers this. The taste is different, I like it more. Not that the other shop isn’t nice, (the other shop not Kazariya taste normal but never failed, but also nothing special ) Kazariya is way better. If have time just try both. Staff service is extremely good, we ordered around 455pm, the lady staff did told us it’s closing but still allow us to eat there as we assured her we will be done fast. I am glad I did came all the way here thou cab fare is expensive. Love the experience.

Located right outside Imamiya shrine, this is a beautiful peaceful spot to enjoy some traditional grilled mochi dessert with green tea and relax from the busy day. Customers are seated first and brought complimentary green tea, then the mochi depending on number of people, and then pay after finished eating. The mochi itself is delicious - blend of sweet and savoury, and perfectly balanced with the slight bitterness of the tea. Not many people when I went, so I was able to enjoy my food at a leisurely pace which I really appreciate. Staff are helpful, though English is limited - mostly just to tell you that the tea is hot and to wait 3 minutes. Pretty sure it was cash only too. Highly recommend for a taste of authentic traditional Kyoto.

After going to other overpriced ‘modern’ tea houses in the Kyoto region, I think fondly of Kazariya. I heard this is the ‘original’, and the decor certainly feels like it’s been around for over a hundred years. Cash-only at 600 yen per person, they serve these wonderfully sweet, freshly charcoal grilled mochi on sticks. Tea comes with the set, and you get to sit under a covered porch and watch people leave the shrine. It feels like you’ve been transported back to the 19th century. Definitely come here and to the shrine next door. Oh, and there’s a competitor across the street. They’re both the same price, so just go to the one with the best seats. I saw some folks finish their snacks and then go to the other for a second round!

Such a wonderful and relaxing place! You can either sit outside or inside on the tatami mats. Even though they they only have this one thing on the menu it was actually the best mochi I ever had, especially with this creamy white sauce and the tea (and you won't have any trouble deciding even if you can't read Japanese). And right next to it you'll find a nice shrine to continue your visit. It also seems like there are not that many tourist. I also just found it by accident but would definitely pay another visit when in Kyoto.

Before visiting the sacred shrines. We start our morning tea with あぶり餅 "aburi-mochi" in かざりや "Kazariya" just like the olden days. This place hasn't changed since ancient time. Kazariya started since year 1656 and hosting locals from different prefectures ever since. Located opposite Ichiwa, the original shop which has been there since a thousand year ago. Competition still exists to these days. As we prefer less sweeter and highly caramelized aburi-mochi, Kazariya is a popular choice among younger generations.

A wonderful cultural experience with sublime aburi-mochi. The cafe first opened in 1656 and I felt its history as I looked at the elegant interior. Every nook and cranny was full-on photogenic old Japan. I sat next to the lovely garden. The mochi was amazing - such a blend of different flavours. I loved the grilled, crunchy bits. The service was excellent. A must-visit.
