If you want to feel like a monk, a mountain goat, and a photographer with a god complex all before 9 AM, get your ass up early and walk to Kiyomizu-dera. I showed up first thing in the morning—no tour buses, no TikTokers with ring lights, no dad yelling “Just take the photo, Susan.” Just the sound of the breeze and those delicate little furin (wind chimes) strung along the eaves, tinkling like nature’s ASMR track. It’s serene. It’s cinematic. It’s Kyoto flexing hard. The view from the Hondo (Main Hall) is ridiculous—lush green hills folding out toward a perfectly placed pagoda like some art director storyboarded the whole damn landscape. Stand there long enough and you’ll start questioning your career, your pace, your everything. The city skyline in the distance? Kyoto Tower stabbing the sky like an exclamation point—just to remind you you’re not dreaming. And that famous wooden stage? Suspended like it’s defying both gravity and common sense. Built without a single nail. Who does that? Japan, that’s who. Pro tip: bring water, leave your cynicism, and come early. Kiyomizu-dera rewards effort. And once the sun gets high and the crowds roll in like a tour group tsunami, you’ll be smug as hell knowing you already had your zen moment and your best photos locked.

Visiting Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto during autumn was an unforgettable experience. The views are absolutely breathtaking, with the temple located on a hillside overlooking the city and surrounded by nature. The atmosphere is truly special! So peaceful, spiritual, and full of beauty. We were lucky to go in fall, when the autumn leaves painted the entire landscape in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s one of those places that really captures the magic of Kyoto. It was really packed but didn’t affect the experience. Highly recommended!

Breathtaking Temple! The alley going towards the temple is super crowded with tourists as there are souvenir shops on both sides. Try to go there early morning to avoid the crowd. Once you reach the temple, be sure to walk the path towards the 3 water springs. There is always a short line for that. After researching Google, all I can say is no matter which one you drink from, the source is the same. It is believed that if you try to drink from all three springs, then you are considered greedy and no rush comes true!
