Kiyomizudera Okunoin (清水寺 奥の院) is a serene and spiritual area located within the grounds of Kiyomizudera Temple, one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks. Situated away from the bustling main hall, the Okunoin, or “Inner Sanctuary,” offers visitors a tranquil retreat to experience the temple’s spiritual atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.

The Okunoin is renowned for its stunning views of Kyoto, especially from its wooden stage, which is slightly smaller but less crowded than the main hall’s iconic platform. The lush surrounding forest, which changes color dramatically with the seasons, provides a picturesque backdrop. During spring, cherry blossoms paint the area in soft pink hues, while autumn brings vibrant red and gold foliage, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Historically, the Okunoin has served as a place for deeper contemplation and prayer, maintaining a quieter and more intimate ambiance compared to the main temple areas. Visitors can admire the architecture of the hall, which reflects traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and discover smaller altars dedicated to various deities.

A visit to the Okunoin is also an opportunity to appreciate the balance between nature and spirituality that defines Kiyomizudera. The sound of rustling leaves and the distant murmur of temple bells create a meditative atmosphere that allows visitors to connect with the essence of this sacred site. Whether seeking spiritual solace or simply enjoying Kyoto’s natural beauty, the Okunoin is an unforgettable part of the...

Okuno-in Hall stands directly above Otowa Waterfall. The present building was rebuilt at the same time as the Main Hall in 1633. Okuno-in also boasts a spacious stage constructed using a unique method, just like the Main Hall. The stunning view of the Main Hall stage and the Kyoto cityscape from here make it a favorite photo opportunity...

清水寺の裏手にある神社で、少し歩いてから離れてみたほうが 清水寺の全体像を写真に収めることができます。紅葉の時期はとても 混み合う場所です The shrine is located behind Kiyomizu-dera, so it's best to walk a little further and then move away to get a picture of Kiyomizu-dera in its entirety. The place is very crowded during the autumn leaves season.
