A lovely small museum in the former home and workshop of one of Japan's great masters of cloissoné. Features a selection of superb, intricately decorated pieces plus exhibits explaining the design and creation processes. The property features a lush garden with a koi pond, so your visit is complemented by the sound of flowing water. This is also a great opportunity to see a traditional Japanese home. I found the kitchen very interesting. It's in the midst of an older neighbourhood, which is interesting to walk around, and it's not far from the Heian Shrine. This is a short visit -- could be an "appetizer" for one of the larger cultural sites nearby. Also, cloissoné was a priority for me, so this museum hit the spot -- but know that it's very much geared to lovers of the...

Inside the museum, you can see many cloisonné works by Namikawa Yasuyuki, as well as the open main house with high lintels and glass screens for overseas visitors, the former studio, and the former kiln. The garden was designed early on by Ogawa Jihei VII (Ueji), and draws the Lake Biwa Canal into the garden pond.
The building is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, a historically designed building designated by Kyoto City, and the garden is a Kyoto City designated garden of scenic beauty. It is one of Kyoto's modern cultural heritage sites, and retains the appearance of a Meiji-era house in good condition.
