The Heian-Jingu Shrine Grand Torii (平安神宮 大鳥居) is one of Kyoto’s most striking landmarks and a symbol of the city’s cultural heritage. This massive torii gate, painted in vivid vermilion, stands at the entrance to the Heian-Jingu Shrine, which was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto’s founding as the capital of Japan.
The grand torii, erected in 1929, is one of the largest in Japan. Standing at approximately 24.4 meters tall and with a crossbeam spanning 33.9 meters, it dominates the landscape and creates a stunning visual approach to the shrine. Its imposing size and brilliant color make it an iconic feature of the Okazaki area, a district known for its cultural institutions such as museums and traditional gardens.
The torii serves as a gateway between the secular world and the sacred grounds of the shrine, which enshrines Emperor Kanmu, the founder of Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor of the ancient capital. Passing under the torii symbolizes purification and the beginning of a spiritual journey.
The grand torii is particularly captivating during festivals, such as the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages), when it frames colorful processions of participants in traditional costumes. Surrounded by wide avenues and the nearby Okazaki Canal, the torii also offers an excellent photo opportunity. Visitors to Heian-Jingu Shrine often pause to admire this architectural masterpiece, which beautifully represents the elegance and grandeur of Kyoto’s history and...
