The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto — Attraction in Kyoto

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, commonly known as MoMAK, is an absolute treasure for art enthusiasts. During our visit, my partner and I had the opportunity to witness the new Sodeisha exhibition, which showcased the avant-garde ceramicists of 20th century Japan. It was an experience that left us awe-inspired and captivated.

The pieces on display were nothing short of breathtaking. The sheer beauty and artistry of the ceramics were surreal, each one a testament to the skill and creativity of the artists. The exhibition went beyond just showcasing the artwork; it delved into the stories behind the pieces and the groundbreaking discoveries in ceramic techniques made by these artists.

The journey through the exhibition was truly inspiring. Learning about the innovative methods and approaches employed by the ceramicists was eye-opening and left us with a deep appreciation for their craft. It was a rare opportunity to witness such a collection of masterpieces in one place.

Appreciation and preference in art will always depend on the eyes of the individual. However, in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Momak, it holds a very special exhibition of "Nihonga".

An art style that arrived from a group of Japanese artists that were sent to Europe in an attempt to learn and understand European art and culture around 1907.

It will be too lengthy to get into the history of why it does that, but the consequences are simply magnificent expressions of individualism and a beautiful marriage between european flair and Japanese roots to create works that are very tastful and unique (IMO).

If you like art and have time on your hands, then i would highly recommend seeing it. It took us 2.30 hours to see both collections with slow pace and read most of the descriptions (English available)

One star for the cashier at the gift shop. She was very rude. My friends and I visited the museum on 2nd of April around 11.30 am. - 01.30 pm. Everything was good until we went to the gift shop because I wanted to buy some souvenirs. We found a cute gift and took a picture of it. Suddenly the Japanese female cashier came to us and took it from my friend’s hand. She also took all the same gifts with her to the back of the counter. My friend confronted her about what she did. At first, she acted like she didn’t know English. Finally, she said sorry and asked us if we still wanted to buy that gift and put it back in my friend’s hand. We said no and walked out. The irony of this story is that my friends and I are also Asian. **My suggestion to the museum; hire someone new who doesn’t like to judge people and isn’t rude and maybe racist because I’m sure we’re not the first and the last to be treated this way.
