Nanzen-ji is quite the compound, the main focal point is of course Sanmon gate and the surrounding gardens. Because of some refurbishment work the temple itself was not open but we walked around and tried to dodge the massive swarm of school children visiting.

However, be aware of your ability to climb which is far easier than the way back to the ground which I wondered during my descent how many people have fallen from the staircase though a robe is available at the wooden rail.
