Interesting how polarized peoples' experiences have been at Ryokan Kanade. Ours was great.||||We stayed in the same room (102) as another reviewer, but without the construction next door and loved it. The private rock garden was lovely, and our room also opened up on the shared back garden, which was beautiful. Our kids stayed in room 101, smaller, but nice, with a smaller private rock garden.||||Unlike other reviews, we found the staff to be extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. When our AC unit acted up, the person at the desk immediately came in and addressed the problem.||||Not sure about the complaint about sleeping on the floor, as that is why one stays at a ryokan. I will admit that I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the mattresses were foam, rather than futons, but they were very comfortable nonetheless.||||We did the breakfast one morning, and it was excellent, according not only to my family, but to my friends from Tokyo, who stayed at the ryokan with us one night.||||Last time my wife and I were in Kyoto, we stayed at a truly premium ryokan. Ryokan Kanade is not a 5-star hotel, nor is it priced like one. This trip we came with my mother and our two children (17 and 18), so I looked for a reasonably priced option, where the kids could still get the experience. After looking a several places, Ryokan Kanade looked like a bargain in the mid-priced ryokans, and it delivered beyond what I was seeking.||||I travel extensively. This year alone, I've been to Asia, Europe, South America and around North America, and stayed in everything from 5-star hotels to Super 8's. They say, "you get what you pay for." While this statement is often not complementary, in the case of Ryokan Kanade, this is not only true, but also meant to be a true complement.||||If I were looking for this experience again, at this price point, would not hesitate...

Read moreThings I liked: It was very quiet and featured a beautiful garden. I found it very zen to walk around the garden in the late afternoon and evening after the lights came on. The staff's service was very good, and every employee was accommodating and patient. The location was not central to Gion, but I did not find myself having a hard time finding places to eat before 9 PM. On the contrary, the attractions I visited near this area were the best I rated, e.g., Okazaki Temple, Heian Jingu Shrine, Philosopher's Path shrines like Eikando Temple and Nanzenji Temple. I visited an excellent and better-priced eel place about 15 min from KANADE, and nobody else was there. (As opposed to another place in Gion.) KANADE is
