Matsushima Fall Light Up at Entsuiin Temple

Every fall, the folks at Entsuiin temple in Matsushima pull out all the stops and make magic happen. In this case, the magic in question is for Matsushima's annual Fall Light Up event, which also includes an event Friday and Saturday nights at the historical Kanrantei teahouse, a food truck pavillion, scenic night boat rides to see the color on the outlying islands, and even a free foot bath. Tickets for the Entsuiin portion of the event are 500 yen per adult and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

For those eager to enjoy the fall colors in northern Japan but lacking the time to take a trip to the mountains, this event is perfect. The doors to Entsuiin open at 5:30 and the event runs until 9PM. If you're interested, come soon as the Light Up experience is only available until November 23rd.

Remember at the temple to slow down to take your best shots in the dark. Selfie sticks, tripods, monopods and drones are not allowed within the temple gardens, so a steady hand would be beneficial. This event does attract a small crowd, and with temperatures dropping, dress warm and come early to ensure the best...

The Temple, Entsu-in Hondou, a Bodhisattva temple of Mitsumune, the grandson of Date Masamune, about 380 years old, is famous for its garden beauty and green moss which needs proper humidities and intensive labor for maintenance and weeding, while its Japanese dry garden (枯山水), karesansui, or Japanese rock garden, often called a Zen garden, is also popular with the visitors, especially for the worshippers. Two other gardens are seasonal for flowers, roses and cryptomeria [Japanese cedar].

The temple’s mausoleum is decorated with Namban [southern barbarian or west foreigner to be polite] art motifs inspired by late Sengoku period contact with the West around 16th and 17th centuries.

The Temple is very quiet and peaceful, tranquil and, above all, it does not have many visitors in the first 2 hours after its opening [09AM], because most of its visitors are from Sendai City by JR train or by tour buses and, often, arrive around after 11AM. Thus, early-bird visitors can enjoy the Temple themselves for the views and for photo taking.

The Temple is in short walking distance from Matsushima Kaigan JR Station. The entrance fee is 500 Yen as...

This temple was built in 1647, to house the mausoleum of Mitsumune Date, who died at the age of 19. He was a grandson of Masamune Date, first feudal lord of Sendai area. This temple is famous for its Japanese style moss garden and full of roses, also in fall, the temple is covered with colored leaves. You can make your own praying beads in this temple. Choosing your favorite power stones with your intuition, decide your design by yourself. Your original praying beads will bring good fortune to you.

Beautiful place to visit while in Matsushima. Take a relaxing stroll through the grounds and enjoy local snacks (as well as one of their many soft cream flavors). In autumn, there was an illumination event. But staff constantly reminded people to ‘not stop walking’. It’s understandable because of the high traffic. Most people ignored them so they could take dozens of pictures. But I felt pressure to move along faster, so it was hard to really enjoy this paid event.
