This temple has been recently restored and it is beautiful, period. The carvings where you can still the original paint, the restored wall paintings where original materials have been used, the beautiful zen, moss, and rose gardens. And at the entrance seeing the stumps of the old cedar trees ruined by the tsunami and next to them the newly planted trees. On one of the centenary cedar trees you can see pink orchids growing in big bunches. You cannot visit Japan and not visit Matsushita

Highly recommended if you're already in the Matsushima area. There is a self guided tour in the temple which is fantastic, though you cannot take photos. The surrounding grounds are also very peaceful and you get a good view at the history behind the temple and it's grounds. 700 JPY to enter and you can buy your tickets at the machine at the entrance. You cannot wear shoes inside, however you are given a bag to place your shoes in and carry with you until you re emerge from the temple

Serene. Peaceful. Blissful. Amazing place to visit to allow your eyes tk feast upon the magnificent landscapes of the Zuiganji Temple. It was not crowded and there were photo opportunities around every corner and at every angle. Lots of history in this place. A very easy place to get to from Matsushima and just 25 minutes by train from Sendai station. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and are looking for some inner solace.

the temple grounds are spacious and surrounded by tall trees and greens, the atmosphere is really calm and peaceful, perfect for a relaxing walk. entrance fee is required but you get to see so much - beautiful temple grounds, buildings, garden, old architecture and artifacts, recreation of lots of artwork and scenes, it's pretty interesting. i love how serene the place is and you can just take your time to explore.

Not gonna lie had very low expectations but I was so wrong this place is magnificent. The approach with the cedars flanked by mystical meditation caves is iconic. Museum is magical and of course has a lot of Date Masume memorabilia. The inside of the kondo is magnificent but you can't take pictures so you'll have to trust me. I wanted to take a sneaky one but I didn't have to courage... Sorry 😞
