Perched on a tiny islet just off the coast of Matsushima, Godaidō Temple is a compact yet iconic structure originally built in 807 and rebuilt in 1604 by warlord Date Masamune. Accessible by a vermilion-lacquered footbridge, the temple enshrines five Buddhist wisdom kings (though they’re only shown to the public every 33 years). Its open-air architecture, intricate wood carvings, and panoramic bay views make it one of Matsushima’s most photogenic and spiritually resonant landmarks — a perfect blend of history and sea breeze.

Japan national treasure Zuiganji temple. Be sure to cross over to the coastline to capture the Matsushima formations. For the history buff the paid main entrance side features golden interior where the Meiji emperor stayed overnight. No photos allowed, but quite worth the 700yen ticket price. Popular spot for tourists, Matsushima is one of the three sightseeing places that represent Japan. The other two being Itsukushima in Hiroshima (the Torii in the ocean) and Amanohashidate in Kyoto (sandbar).

It's a small shrine. Along the coast made of wood Even though it looks old, it is beautiful and magical. I came here on a work-day (April 17, 2024), so there weren't many people. The entrance is a distinctive, eye-catching red wooden bridge crossing a small canal, making it seem like this shrine is located on an island. Besides making merit, tourist also admired view of the beautiful Matsushima bay.

Here's a translated version that aims to capture the beauty and historical significance of Matsushima's Godaido: "I’m about to cross the iconic lattice bridge and land on the small island where Matsushima’s Godaido stands. Rebuilt by Date Masamune, this temple has a certain weathered charm. Matsushima's Godaido: A Symbol of Beauty Godaido is a breathtaking temple that stands on a small island, accessible only by a striking red lattice bridge. It's a symbol of Matsushima's beauty. History and Characteristics: Foundation: Legend has it that in 807 AD, Sakanoe no Tamuramaro established a temple here during his eastern campaign. Later, Jikaku Daishi enshrined the Five Great Wisdom Kings, giving the temple its current name. Reconstruction: The present building was reconstructed in 1604 by Date Masamune, making it the oldest surviving Momoyama-style architecture in Tohoku. Unique Features: Its location, accessible only by a lattice bridge, is one of its defining features. The temple itself is adorned with intricate carvings, making it a visually stunning structure. Special Opening: The statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings are enshrined and are only unveiled to the public once...
