Ibarakiken Gokoku Shrine — Attraction in Mito

市街地から離れた場所にある神社からか、ゆっくりと時間が流れるような空気をまとう神社。休日であっても訪れる人は多くなく、境内を散策しながら静かに時間を過ごすことが出来る。偕楽園内の桜山に位置するからか、春には境内の桜が見頃を迎える。 護国神社の名の通り、幕末から戦時中の戦没者が合祀されており、いくつかの鎮魂碑を見ることが出来る。戦争が終わり既に長い年月が経過し、それらの石碑もどうか長い幾年平和であり続けるよう願いながら鎮座しているようだ。訪れる際は、争いの無い恒久的な平和を願いたい。

Because the shrine is located far from the city center, it has an air of slow-moving time. Even on holidays, there are not many visitors, so you can spend your time quietly strolling around the shrine grounds. In spring, the cherry blossoms on the shrine grounds come into full bloom. As the name "Gokoku Shrine" implies, the war dead from the end of the Edo period to the end of the war are enshrined here, and several memorials can be seen. The war is over and many years have already passed, so these monuments seem to be sitting there hoping for a long period of peace. If you visit the site, you'll wish for a lasting peace...

桜の時期はライトアップされて綺麗です！ 明治11年（1878年）、明治維新前後（嘉永6年以降）に殉じた水戸藩士約1800柱を祀るため、常磐神社の境内の現在の東湖神社の場所に立てられた鎮霊社を起源とする。その後、茨城県出身の戦没者を逐次合祀していった。1939年4月に鎮霊社護国神社に改称した。昭和15年（1940年)に独立の神社となり、昭和16年（1941年）10月、内務大臣指定護国神社となって茨城県護国神社に改称し、同年11月に現在地の偕楽園内の桜山に遷座した。 敗戦後、護国神社は軍国主義施設と見なされ、存続を図るために改称を余儀なくされた。茨城県護国神社もそれに続き、1945年8月に地名により桜山神社となった。平和条約を締結し、日本が独立を回復すると、1954年10月にもとの社名に戻した。...
