Read moreThis whimsical Kusama pumpkin has basically become the symbol of the island. I love it. It’s a simple, fun thing sitting on a pier out in the water. There’s often lines of folks waiting to take their snaps and they can often be irritatingly inconsiderate about the people waiting, while they take 85 versions of the same photo. However, you can sometimes see that there’s nobody there so you can take your time and enjoy your time with the pumpkin. 🎃
You can’t bicycle into any of the Benesse property but if you’d like to go to the pumpkin the East Gate is much closer or you can take the bus not far away.
The best time of day for photos seems to be late afternoon but it can get more crowded.
Final note, at high tide there was already seawater splashing up onto the pier, so I’m not sure it would survive another big storm. Enjoy it...
Read moreBenesse Art Site Naoshima is pleased to announce that Yayoi Kusama's "Pumpkin," the outdoor sculpture displayed at Benesse House Museum that had been damaged by Typhoon Lupit last August, had been newly created and exhibited at the same location as the original work on October 4th, 2022, following repeated discussions with all relevant parties.
Kusama's "Pumpkin" had been installed on an old pier jutting out into the sea, creating a scene unique to Naoshima that stands out against the blue sea and green trees in the background.
