The Otaru Canal is one of the city’s most iconic and beautiful spots, and walking along it feels like stepping into a postcard. The water here is surprisingly clean and clear, reflecting the old stone warehouses and charming street lamps that line the banks. As you stroll, you can often see salmon swimming gracefully in the canal and ducks gliding across the surface, which makes the scene even more lively and peaceful.

The area is very well-maintained, with wide paths for walking and plenty of places to stop, take photos, and enjoy the scenery. By day, it has a bright and refreshing atmosphere, while in the evening, the lights along the canal create a romantic and nostalgic mood. It’s a perfect spot to slow down, relax, and take in the charm of Otaru’s history and nature...

The tourist information centre nearby has some great gifts too. This place is well worth a visit. We did an afternoon trip, walked the whole length of the canal and the shopping/restaurant street. Would...
