Shinagawa Shrine — Attraction in Tokyo

Shinagawa Shrine is one of 10 shrines forming a ring around the Imperial Palace, appointed by the Emperor Meiji as symbols of a new era.

Established at the end of the Heian Era by Minamoto no Yoritomo, Shinagawa Shrine is a historic site where Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have prayed for victory. Enshrined within the inner shrine is Daitokuten, one of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune in Tokai area. Shinagawa Shrine is also counted as one of the Eight New Scenic Spots of Tokyo.

If you watch the movie Shin Godzilla, Shinagawa Shrine appears in the scene where Godzilla lands from Tokyo Bay; people are seen running away from him by climbing up the stone stairs of the shrine (although it appears that the actual filming took place somewhere else). This is just one testament to its popularity as a spot adored by the locals since long ago and one which is garnering the attention of tourists as well. On this occasion, we’ll be showing you ways to enjoy yourself at Shinagawa Shrine. Vermilion-colored torii gates are lined up along a pathway which continues to the Ana Inari Shrine located beside the outer shrine.

When you make your way to Shinagawa Shrine, you should first make a visit for prayer at the outer shrine. Deities enshrined here include the guardian deity of prayer fulfillment and maritime traffic safety Amenohirinome-no-Mikoto, as well as Ukanome-no-Mikoto and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. And off to the right next to the outer shrine is the Ana Inari Shrine, which is said to present divine favor relating to fortune with money and business. This is one of the 10 shrines that make a ring around the Imperial Palace of Tokyo and known as Jyuu Jinja (10 shrines). I think the shrines offers several different attributes other than authentic Japan's shrine experience.

If you like plum blossom, there are plum trees around the vicinity, white and red. The trees around the shrine are also offering a place to sit and relax especially after climbing the stairs. There are also a roundabout way to enter the shrine. There's a hidden stair on the left side when you're climbing the main stairs, and it will offer you different views of the city.

One last thing that I like about this shrine is that if you went all the way back, you will find a stairs that going down. At the end of it you will find a small shrine but it's so lively due to the lighting and the charms. It also host a small fountain with a small dragon statue. I don't really understand the meaning, but some people are washing their money there....

品川神社は、京急の新馬場駅の北西100mほどの品川区北品川の高台に鎮座している神社です。 旧社格は郷社で、元准勅祭社として東京十社のひとつでもあります。東海道北品川宿の鎮守です。

文治3年（1187年）源頼朝が安房国の洲崎神社から、海上交通安全と、祈願成就の守護神として、安房国の洲崎明神である天比理乃咩命を勧請して祀り、品川大明神と称したのに始まります。 鎌倉時代末期の元応元年（1319年）北条高時の臣、二階堂道蘊が「宇賀之売命（稲荷神)」を、さらに室町時代中期の文明10年（1478年)に江戸城を築いた太田道灌が「素戔嗚尊(天王神）」をそれぞれ祀りました。 天正19年(1591年)徳川家康から5石の社領の朱印を受け、徳川家の尊崇する特別な神社として社紋も徳川家の家紋の「丸に三つ葉葵」と定め、「御修復所（神社の建物の再建・修復などは全て江戸幕府が賄う）」として徳川家の厚い庇護を受けました。 慶長5年（1600年）徳川家康が関ヶ原の戦いへ出陣の際に品川神社を参拝して戦勝祈願し、その後、祈願成就の御礼として仮面（天下一嘗の面）・神輿（葵神輿）などを奉納しました。 寛永14年(1637年)3代将軍の徳川家光が東海寺を建立した際には、境内の一部がその敷地となったため代替地を賜わり、神社の位置が東海寺の鬼門に当たることから、同社の鎮守としました。 明治元年（1868年）明治天皇が品川神社を准勅祭社と定め、東京の鎮護と万民の安泰を祈る神社の一つとしました。

「双龍鳥居」は、門柱に龍の細工が施された石鳥居で、境内入り口の階段前に建立されています。左の柱に昇り龍、右の柱に降り龍が彫刻されています。 杉並区の高円寺と馬橋稲荷神社にも双龍鳥居があり、当社のものと合わせて「東京三鳥居」ともいわれています。

境内入り口には東海七福神の大黒天を祀っています。 東海道の沿道には由緒ある社寺が多く、古くから七福神が祀られ、「七難即滅七福即生」の故事により参詣も多く、1932年（昭和7年）に品川が大東京に編入された記念として東海七福神初詣を定めました。 お正月は初詣や七福神めぐりの参拝客で賑わいます。1月2日には新春餅つき大会が開催され、つきたての餅がふるまわれます。

現在の社殿は昭和39年（1964年）に新築されました。 御祭神は、天比理乃咩命（祈願成就・航海安全の神）・素盞嗚尊（風水害除け・厄除け・病気除けの神）・宇賀之売命（農業・商業・産業繁栄の神）です。

「浅間神社」は境内社で、傍には富士塚の「品川富士」があります。 富士塚とは、気軽に富士山へ行けない庶民のため、江戸時代に作られたミニチュア富士山です。 品川富士は、高さ15mで、都内最大の高さを誇りますが、2～3分で山頂まで登山できます。

境内社の「阿那稲荷神社」は、金運のパワースポットとして人気で、阿那稲荷神社下社にある「一粒万倍の御神水」でお金を洗い、地元商店街で使用すると後に万倍になって戻ってくると言われています。

「従一位勲一等伯爵 板垣退助之墓」は、社殿の裏にありますが、品川東海寺の塔頭・高源院境内です。 1923年（大正12年）の関東大震災の後に東海寺が世田谷区烏山に移転し墓だけが残されました。 その後の周辺土地の変遷により、接道の関係から品川神社を通らねば墓所へ入れない為、品川神社にあると誤解されています。退助の長男の板垣鉾太郎、祖父の爵位を継いだ板垣守正の墓は同所にはなく、静岡・富士霊園にあります。

毎年6月上旬の「北の天王祭」と呼ばれる品川神社例大祭では、町中が大変な人出で賑わいます。 祭りのクライマックス、53段の急階段を神輿が上がる宮入シーンは必見です。

品川神社例大祭と春祭・新嘗祭に奉納される「太太神楽」は、徳川家康が関ヶ原の合戦出陣の折、戦勝祈願として奉納されたもので東京都の文化財に指定されています。 春秋の彼岸中日には、境内にある七つの鳥居をくぐり無病息災を祈る「七つ石鳥居くぐり」を行っています。
