If you’ve ever found yourself asking “What could be so special about vegetable soup?” I suggest you come right over to Shiba Mama no Omise. I wandered into the small cafe in search of something for lunch in Zao Onsen, and was a bit skeptical when I read that it was mainly made up of veggies. Seeing that the soup was on almost everyone’s table, I decided to go for it anyway, ordering the veggie soup with green curry and Champon noodles. So glad I did! The aroma alone was incredible. Every single vegetable was cooked to perfection—bean sprouts, mushrooms, greens, carrots, and more. It was the perfect blend of hearty, crunchy, warm, and filling.
Side note: the portion sizes are HUGE. I got the regular sized bowl for the veggie soup, because I was used to portion sizes in Japan being on the smaller size. But I ended up not being able to finish it all. They have it in a “half size” meant for children, but I’m starting to think I should’ve just gone...

Salad, soup and a few sample sizes of pickels and fruits
50% of the salad was cabbage which was hiding under the lettuce. Boring and underwhelming especially for 1,300 yen

My initial thoughts about this place that serves only vegetables meals - how great can a vegetable meal be? Ooooh boy, how wrong I was. I took a bite of the “Vegetable Full Toast Sand” and it was so flavourful and delicious. Not flavourful from the sauces they used, but from the elaborate varieties of vegetables packed inside the sandwich. Vegetables never tasted so so good 🤤🤤😋😋
